it’s pretty obvious that a lot of people remember that COVID lockdowns were unpleasant and from there just extrapolate that they were therefore bad policy

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

My Hank Green AI take is that his own statement made it pretty clear that his brain has been rotted by the system of algorithm-fueled "content creation" that makes you believe that producing more and more and more and more is a way of creating value for the world and AI was a seductive tool there

Now, there's a lot of ill-informed stuff going around about this guy, but let me tell you, he literally went to several meetings about this game and even went that extra mile and paid some attention. He did some top grade nodding, and possibly went "Uh-huh" a few times. Worth every cent.

So I woke up this morning to find out that Ozzy Osbourne’s son made a video falsely accusing me of using AI to write a Rolling Stone article about the Tate brothers.

it all just sort of makes sense, now, huh. all this shit was just generated by AI and he believed it all enough to parrot it on his podcast, and his fact checking team had to clean up after him this is a really massive blow to popular science. Everything is in question now. does he realize this?

Even ignoring everything else, as well, using an LLM for this kind of thing means that you're relying on an automated summary that might not include some small detail that changes everything you're about to say.

So, ok, a thing about telling yr audience "i use AI for my info gathering/research but then I look over it and fix any errors" is that you unfortunately told me youve outsourced your knowledge base on this subject to the machine, and therefore I have no reason to believe you CAN catch those errors

If you can't do it without AI, then you can't do it. And AI can't do it either. You're both just pretending you can.

I am very glad this post gives me permission to judge Hank Green for using AI. I don't use it for my work, I don't use it for anything in my daily life, I would NEVER willingly use it for any aspect of writing or creating. I have never used an LLM. It's not that hard to not use them!

I know people are tired and overworked, but I feel like oftentimes they’re offloading a creative (and, on some level, rewarding) activity to free up time that they’ll ultimately spend scrolling on their phones—thereby further reducing their brains to mush. it’s a vicious cycle of meaninglessness

Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.

i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice

Someone gave me a "summary" that some AI had produced of a panel I was on, including pull quotes. The quotes were all invented -- no one on the panel said that stuff -- even though the AI was given an audio recording of the whole thing. I told them to trash it and did the transcription myself.

Surely the solution here is just *don't use AI tools* for your writing and research and continue to do your writing and research in ALL the ways you were doing it before you started using AI instead of doing the work??

Absolutely no AI whatsoever in the art / design process!

To make things worse, AI *can't do the jobs* it's replacing: AI is predicated on the premise that monopolies, duopolies and cartels that control the global economy can deliberately worsen their products without suffering economic or regulatory consequences, because they're the only game in town. 4/

As *tech*, AI isn't exceptional. It's not exceptionally wicked. It's not exceptionally good. Take away the accompanying, galactic-scale stock-swindle, and we'd call AI's apps "plug-ins" and we'd use them and abuse them in the same way that we've used every other technology: www.normaltech.ai 1/
