This take about fiction in all its forms makes me mad every time. The only alternative is boring, sterile characters with no motivations or conflict. Model minorities are worse representation than minority characters who do bad things.

This is worth amplifying (also this podcast is rad), that Roman slavery was, y'know, slavery. In fact, all slavery is horrifying, but the broader 'Mediterranean' slavery tradition (which is also, by the by, the ancestor of Atlantic slavery) is one of the *more extreme* such traditions.

This is a great call out in part because “disabled people suffer” is the thing RFK likes most about the present state of global health, and it’s the problem he’s trying hardest to worsen. I should have led with it. Meaningful oversight.

To the extent there are problems with The System, they’re largely (1) poor people suffer, (2) women suffer, and (3) people of color suffer. These are all things RFK likes about The System. To give him credit for “shaking things up” is to out yourself as either a eugenicist or a dumbfuck. Or both.
