If you are 38 years old or older, I want you to start working on your foot strength and ankle mobility. Unless I hate you. Then I want you to rest for ten years and then suddenly try to hop off a step one day, cold.

BTS announces they will not submit their music for the 2027 GRAMMY awards, following the Recording Academy’s addition of an Asian-focused category: “I hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language.”

I just had this conversarion with an editor yesterday. If you start hedging for imagined bad faith readers, you have stopped writing and started journaling a fan fic to them.
there is literally no amount of caveats or careful wording that will protect you from stupidity or bad faith, so you might as well say things straightforwardly and strongly to begin with.
just got an email from my (former) chair that the university has acted & the state has approved the formal closure of my department. this was done without any faculty input on the decision or the process, & has ended a vibrant, growing (!), humanities department that won teaching and research awards
Anyway, happy Monday! The Dean is shutting down my department - Religion & Culture, the only 1 of is kind in the country & home to the innovative Major in Humanities for Public Service. There is no immediate budgetary or political pressure for this decision
I don’t talk about real life on Main but my comment requires credentialing: i was at food banks 4x times last month, trying to support etc. Food insecurity is off the charts & I just don’t see anything on the horizon to help people. It’s terrifying. I just come home and sulk and cry and dissociate.

every time you write overly defensively you should remember that you are pursuing a strategy of writing careful sentences specifically for people who demonstrably either won't or can't read them

the best part of post-tenure academia has been having the career space to slow down. the damage done by the contraction of tenure track positions + poor security/working conditions of non tenure track faculty + quantification of academic contributions is incalculable
FWIW, I don’t think the major problem in my field, or related ones, is that people need to move faster & produce more. I read a lot of papers as part of the job, and I’m increasingly convinced we’d benefit from fewer papers and better ones, not more mediocre work produced ever more “efficiently.”
You are actually oppressed because Black people are even if you're not Black, but that doesn't mean you use our articulations to free ourselves to free only yourself without joining the struggle for our freedom. The point is you have to want us free. Not want yourself free alone from what we do.
