Writing methods for an experiment. Is "novel object recogniton test objects were whatever random crap the PI could hurriedly find from Morrison's tat corner on a rainy Wednesday in Glasgow when it turned out the original objects were not exciting enough for our diva mice" too honest?

Ah, houghmagandie is one of the funnier Scots word. Not one I use often but always makes me smile nonetheless.

I've had a lot of fun this afternoon with a stripper called Titan while my wife was out with the kids.
Really cool (and somewhat freighting) work on Gen AI use and highschool performance in China. Homework Scores rocket up, time spend doing homework collapses, then predictably exam scores are way down. Results show bimodal response ~75% see scores drop, the other 20-25% keep doing the work.
The Generative AI Learning Penalty: Evidence from Chinese Secondary Education
Using 30 months of panel data on 26,811 Chinese students in grades 7-12, we study how generative AI affects homework productivity and learning. The data combine

Welp, Stephen Miller happens to LOVE the new Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Doctor say that vaccines are one of the greatest breakthroughs in medical history. A nepo baby who snorts cocaine off toilet seats, bathes in raw sewage, and takes raccoon penises home for “further study“ says they cause autism. For busy parents, it can be hard to know who to trust.

BREAKING: Indigenous white people commit riot and arson. Incompetent indigenous white police fire water cannon. Indigenous white politicians who fucked up our economy discuss "legitimate concerns" in lying newspapers owned by indigenous white tax evaders. Immigrants somehow remain the problem.
Okay, this is all really bad, but I am confused in what sense Frontiers wasn't immediately recognisable as a predatory paper mill from its founding. Yes, there are people publishing in their journals whose work I respect highly, but Frontiers' business model and priorities were *never* in doubt.
I've said many times that friends don't let friends publish in Frontiers... sad to see another example of why this is correct. 😟
I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇

There is LITERALLY nothing more English* than the Cornish language. It is endemic, spoken in England, in one form or another since the Iron Age, via its Common Britonic ancestor. It is a sign of the callousness of the fascist Reform extremists to seek to erase this cultural gem.
Reform councillor questions Cornish language demand
The strategy to boost written, heard and learnt Cornish was debated at a meeting.

Sign up for SfN then get turned back at the US border and sent home (if you're lucky)... it'll be a long time before I attend a #NeuroSkyence conference in the US again.

If you are worried about this, can you please write to your MP asking them to stop the unfair & cruel ban on trans ppl using public spaces. I’ve included everything you need to target your MP. This actually works & we need straight ppl to do this, too. I’ve included data to help! Please!
Each UK MP constituency has roughly 70,000 eligible voters. When writing to your MP tell them there are 6,300 LGBTQ ppl 980 lesbians 1,120 gay men 3,710 Bi ppl 770 trans ppl Can they afford to upset 9% of the electorate, as well as their friends & families? If just 3 ppl each - that’s 27% [25,200]

The US is no longer a function democracy but is led by an authoritarian regime. If this happened in any other country, people would be up in arms.
Remember the current NIH director going on about protecting researchers from government censorship? Today his people called the police in to forcibly remove my colleagues from their own society meeting for sharing an editorial published in their flagship journal that was critical of him. Gift link
Maggots that only eat living, warm-blooded flesh. Truly stuff of nightmares here... 😱🫣
Happy Tuesday! Who's ready to hear about 1. Flesh-eating maggots (mostly go after cattle) 2. They're native to the US 3. The USDA has kept them out of the US since the 1960s 4. But the flesh-eating maggots are making a 21st century comeback. And believe it or not it may be thanks to MAGA.

First off, these cells are gigantic. This one, for example, has >72 cm of axon! To our knowledge, it’s the longest neuron ever fully reconstructed. I leave it to the reader as an exercise to estimate the length of a human LC neuron. 5
