Trans people have been oppressed for decades. Centuries. Yes, we haven't always been a cultural fixation or had the Eye of Sauron on us. That happened because we demanded dignity and respect and humanity instead of being relegated to a marginal existence of sexual exploitation and poverty.

Optics are distractions used by elite classes to cover up their motivation for fascist drives against minorities, which is to destroy working class solidarity.
I sometimes see people romanticize the past, citing a few odd cases where some women were able to transition without much friction and be seen as scientific curiosities. ("GI becomes blonde bombshell!") That's ignoring the many, many trans people who couldn't do that and died in obscurity.
It is undeniable and factually true that transition today is easier, more accessible, and more acknowledged and understood than it's ever been. That's what conservatives are reacting to, what's driving them absolutely mad. The "foundation" of sex as "fixed" and "immutable" crumbling in real time.
We may be in the middle of reactionary turn due to perceived overreach by women and queers and racialized people, and we may be in a fractious time where long-held coalitions seem more fragmentary and unreliable than ever before. But we also have more people transitioning than ever before.
