Helen Paterson’s work on advancing how police and courts understand memory is recognised in prestigious Eureka prizes * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast Memory is an imperfect thing: research shows that recollections of single events – a purse being snatched, say – differ to those about repeated or ongoing events, such as incidents of domestic and family violence. “What our research shows is that compared to a single-event witness, a repeated-event witness tends to report more gist-like details, the overall details of what typically would happen, and the things that remain constant between the episodes,” said Helen Paterson, an associate professor in forensic psychology at the University of Sydney. CHICKEN MYSTERY: I am chicken-sitting for neighbors. All 4 hens are in the coop and have been continuously in the run all day. There was only 1 egg when I checked today (normally 2-3). And now: I just found an egg in *my* garden, ~50 feet from the coop. HOW?? Who am I likely dealing with here?
Over the weekend, my kids and I played a ton of Catan, and after decades of service, we decided to retire our beloved set. Here's a little appreciation thread for objects of play and their gradual decay 🧵
@dlchypetrain.bsky.social @jeffcannata.bsky.social If you'd like to learn more about Junensha that was in your parting gifts this week, Quinns from Shut Up & Sit Down did a great overview a couple of years ago. youtu.be/6_dlxbGUNNQ?...

@gil.hova.net My friend @the1ben.bsky.social recently bought the Allplay reprint of The Networks, and I just wanted to let you know that people are really enjoying it. He's gone back and got expansions now. He'd been looking for a copy for a few years.
@amikebloomtype.bsky.social Question that struck me from your interview with Simon when he talks about Lottie "calling a spade a f'ing shovel"... Can you recall what your impression of Australians was from before you watched Survivor? Probably difficult to answer, but how does that compare to now?
@stephenfishbach.bsky.social Watching Know-It-Alls I always wonder... Have you watched any of the AU seasons?
@shannongaitz.bsky.social To answer your question from the pod, I am enjoying s50 but mostly on the strength of the cast and the weight of their histories. I'm sure the strategy is there but it's stifled by the game design and overshadowed by production.
@edenporter.bsky.social You're doing Clocktower! Fantastic!
I'm enjoying all the franchise callbacks that come from having so much guaranteed talent on #survivor s50. But #survivorau has consistently been delivering more interesting, dynamic tribal councils again this year. The US Blood Moon twist is just too random. Nostalgia, but little tension.
@edenporter.bsky.social Thanks for the enjoyable recaps! As much as Chekhov's Rice was narratively unsatisfying, I like the red herring. People complain the edit is sometimes too easy to read. So don't you think it's healthy for us to occasionally get misdirected? Keeps us guessing. #survivorau
@jeffcannata.bsky.social Regarding rhythm games, have you tried @yarg.in ? Why wait? I'm having great fun with it.
Australian Survivor is back, and so are we! #survivorau youtu.be/lcqLv3kR8pA

Sometimes I feel like scammers don't appreciate the work I put into these puns.
A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain. A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones. The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...
@stephenfishbach.bsky.social Arrived in Melbourne, Australia. Looking forward to it, although I'll probably take my time.
I really wish Bluesky links in dark mode could be changed to something other than dark blue on black. I know my eyes aren't great, but when someone is mentioned, I find it very difficult to make out who it is unless I use the Magnifier. #bluesky #accessiblity
Heat is nasty, and it will kill. Report by Victoria's chief health officer, Dr John Carnie, put the final figure at 374 for the 2009 Heatwave. Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay safe, look out for everyone and everything. #MelbWeather /ends
Forecasts to watch for... 49C for Mildura, potential new Victorian record. 48C for Swan Hill, hottest day on record. Current record is 47.5C in 2019. 45C for Melbourne, hottest day since 2009, Black Saturday all-time record of 46.4C. Current state record is 48.8C at Hopetoun in 2009. 3/4
A Stevenson screen is always set over a natural surface, like grass, and avoid surfaces like concrete. The Urban Heat Island effect makes cities hotter as well. Dark surfaces like roads and concrete radiate more heat. Find shade, be like a thermometer in a Stevenson screen to be cool. 2/4
Throwing some shade. Automated weather stations measure air temperatures in the shade, in ventilated hutches about 1.2 meters above ground level, because there can be as much as a 7°C temperature difference between the temperature measured at the ground and 2m above the ground. 1/4 #Heatwave
Earthborne Rangers: Thought I could use Quisi the little rascal to help exhaust Quiet, the predator so it wouldn't hurt my Rangers. Accidentally got her 1-shot and the day ended. Whoops. Live and learn. 😂 @earthbornegames.bsky.social
@myleskuah.bsky.social @shannongaitz.bsky.social I just started watching RHAP Mafia. Looking forward to seeing you play! They should get you on their Survivor Clocktower games.
My nephew is trying to find a job in game development in Melbourne. He has experience with Unity. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice I can give him?
lol Malcolm Roberts asking why Bluesky is exempted from the social media ban. He claims it could be "political bias" because it is a "left wing hangout" and X is included and it's a "conservative hangout". eSafety says Bluesky has been assessed as "very low risk" with around 50,000 Australian users
