Not only did they absolutely beg for this, they made it so that “merit” was synonymous with being white so now you’re stuck with precisely the kind of moron who believes that. www.politico.com/news/magazin...
It is #America250 this summer - and it is also #Colorado150.
Part II of my series on civilian control of the military is live! I cover the Whiskey Rebellion to Ulysses S. Grant, then pose some questions for us to consider today. Check it out and let me know what you think. open.substack.com/pub/imperfec...

Another opportunity to play everyone’s favorite game: “What if a Democrat did it!”
NEW: In a stunning admission, the Trump administration admitted in court documents that it canceled billions in energy grants to states "based solely" on politics -- and whether that state was represented by Democrats and backed Harris in 2024. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/24/b...
I want people to understand the full impact of the devastation that First Nations in Canada are facing. It's NOT just that people and wildlife are losing their homes...it's the history that is being lost for generations to come.
I’m interested in any political imagination for accountability. It has to be proactive & retroactive. It has to be spectacular. And, ideally, it would leave so many of them broke that it actually becomes a deterrent. Being poor is truly all they care about not because they don’t care about prison.
The fires in Ontario - like so many others - demonstrating viscerally how climate change perpetuates the displacement and dispossession of Indigenous peoples, who have least contributed to emissions and over and over again put their bodies on the line to prevent fossil fuel development.
These images of First Nations community members evacuating Collins, Ontario on motorboats are absolutely surreal www.facebook.com/reel/1548244...
Oh, honey . . . We’re not even going to be talking about Lindsey Graham next week.
Stephen Miller on Lindsey Graham: "He's someone we're still gonna be talking about 200 years from now"
school shooters being primarily white boys and law enforcement that indiscriminately kills being primarily white men feels related somehow
To be a historian is to speak ill of the dead and the rest of you should take more history classes and join us.
Thank you so much to @hcrichardson.bsky.social and the great producers at @250to250.bsky.social for the opportunity to be a part of this important project in celebration of #America250!

It’s a beautiful evening, the National Mall is open and people are having a wonderful time.
On @npr.org (All Things Considered) this evening! A clip from my conversation with Ryan Warner of Colorado Matters, from Crested Butte in May: www.npr.org/2026/07/01/n...
This historian wants to shatter the myth of the Old West
Megan Kate Nelson, author of The Westerners wants to shatter the myth of the frontier, one of white easterners coming west in covered wagons with a nuclear family.

Basically the Supreme Court is 5-4 on whether America is white man's country
Weird how this never applies to the Second Amendment.
Kavanaugh says that Constitution is an "enduring document" and that new exceptions to birthright citizenship can be added for "modern situations that were unknown or unanticipated by the Constitution’s Framers"
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the conference panelist who sends in a 40-page paper will also *not* send a bio.

If your 80-year-old grandpa was insisting that the reason the backyard pool has algae in it is because terrorists are trying to make him look bad and demanding the police arrest somebody, you'd put him in a senior care facility before the end of the day.
Thrilled to announce my book will be out in Oct! When politicians claim to speak for "the people" on health, history tells a different story: ordinary Americans — not demagogues — built this country's healthcare from the ground up.
