The govt has fired *all* the immigration attorneys representing detained children and given a $150 million contract to a 26-employee law firm in Texas with ONE immigration attorney. @theyoungcenter.bsky.social's Child Advocates are now the last line of defense for kids in deportation hearings.
Wanna help? Become a Waymaker! We're running, walking, cycling 20,000 miles in September to raise money to get immigrant kids out of detention and back with family. Someone who kayaks to work is dedicating his miles to Waymakers! A salsa dance class is counting steps! It all counts! #BeAWaymaker
Not sure what the point is of a list that includes 4 Tana French books (yes, we know she is good and popular). Gone Girl at the top is justified but again, we don’t need a list to tell us this. So…? www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Hollywood has gotta figure out guardrails for this shit. just endlessly demoralizing (I liked this movie a lot)
Went to go rewatch The Vast of Night, only to discover that they took it off Amazon Prime… the service that released it exclusively. So now it’s literally just not available anywhere. Good times.
Poster’s disease: the affliction of our time, fatal in rare cases
In Christopher Nolan’s “Odyssey,” viewers see inside the Trojan horse, but they “do not see inside the characters or their world,” Emily Wilson argues. theatln.tc/04uouYu6 🎨: Anna Ruch / The Atlantic. Sources: Heritage Images / Getty; Melinda Sue Gordon / Universal Pictures / Everett Collection.
Just a few days ago, Senator Moreno was asked if his daughter's alleged abuser should drop out, and he responded, "I don't know."
Moreno on Max Miller: "My daughter lives in constant fear of this man ... you can't fathom what that makes me feel like when the dad's number one job is to protect your kids... if there's any minimum standard for being an elected official, he feels to meet it. I don't care about the politics at all"
So the federal government is going to pay goons to go probably assault people who have *already been deported* and shake them down for tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in economies where a thousand dollars is a small fortune?
NEW: CBP is shopping for a contractor to track down people the US has deported to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala and collect unpaid immigration fines — debts that can top $1.8 million a person.
My late grandmother used to rage about how all the old Democrats needed to retire and let young people take over. She would have agreed with all these other things too
At the cafe today, 5 older people (70s) were unanimously agreed that older dems like Schumer shod step aside, Dems in general need to get their shit together, Trump supporters are a cult, and McConnell is probably brain dead and it's being hidden for political reasons. So, that's where we're at
That's what taxes are, man. That's the definition of taxes. "You are subsidizing things you might never use" man shut the fuck up. My taxes currently subsidize like oil company exec private jets, you think I'm upset at low-income people eating inexpensive bananas?
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
this show looks better than any other show ever made but I do think there’s a big range between that and the absolute sludge garbage we see on our screens all the time now
mad men is borrowing a lot of lessons canonized by todd haynes' work on far from heaven, which is a douglas sirk pastiche, sure, but re-taught 00s tv showrunners a lot about lighting grids in-studio, music stings, and atmospheric resonance that mad men needed for its playbook all lost now!!!
We’re also funding death squads but what’s really offensive is that somewhere out there a poor person might be able to eat
Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.
As a Religious Studies professor, this directly targets my livelihood in a way that makes a mockery of any supposed profession of concern the administration has ever expressed for me as a Jewish person on campus.
President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v
Okay so we all know this book massively obfuscates her actual assets etc but also, listening I’m like… how am I supposed to sympathize with someone making financial decisions that are this shockingly stupid?
Finally listening to STRANGERS via Libby—purely out of a sense of book critic responsibility—it’s fine so far though even 20% in the way she talks about her absurdly wealthy milieu is mind-bending. I poked around Goodreads and popular negative reviews of this book have been DELUGED by defenders.
yeah fuck those social work majors amirite

Personally, I was relieved when schools closed in 2020 because my mom is a teacher and I didn’t want her to die.
When disabled people/many people who work on disability/health pointed to the dangers of this kind of framing since COVID, they were usually mocked ("oh you think everything is eugenics") or ignored. But normalising the idea that the deaths of disabled people are desirable/reassuring is dangerous.
Breaking News: Two deaths in Michigan have been linked to cyclospora. Both people who had the parasite also had underlying health issues.
the only people who could ever earnestly support means testing are people who've never had to be means tested before. it is a humiliating, dehumanizing bureaucratic hostage negotiation with a system whose primary purpose is to *not* provide financial support as often as humanly possible
The Seattle City Council just voted 6-3 to approve Joy Hollingsworth's amendment to delay universal school lunches for kids, replacing them with vouchers for qualifying low-income parents to buy groceries over school breaks and weekends. Eddie Lin, Alexis Mercedes Rinck, and Rob Saka voted no.
Watching GRIFFIN IN SUMMER and basically screaming with laughter throughout. Every choice is so perfect... its understanding of the horrors of adolescence, horrific artist behavior, the lure of hot dumb men... I am in awe. Everett Blunck (also great on THE AUDACITY) is a prodigy.
“If this was true, I would be in jail” is not a real profession of innocence; it is a brag about how strenuously the state protects the male right of private sphere violence against women and children.
Those who believe things like this are working hard at not understanding the finite options available to someone whose abuser has not been prosecuted, found guilty, etc. by the law. And how rarely those things happen to abusers, esp. high-status white male abusers.
Bernie Moreno reminds you that Dr. Fauci deserves prison, but the guy who abused & terrorized his daughter needs psychological help.
Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) just tweeted that his ex-son-in-law Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) "needs serious psychological help." Read @abbyvesoulis.bsky.social blockbuster investigation that broke the Miller story wide open www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

I wasn’t vulnerable. Fit and hard working. But it left me unable to walk for 6 months. Kidneys at 51%, heart damage. 18 months to mobility. 4 years to full recovery. I guess I’m expendable though. This is astonishing revisionism. #LongCovid
