I want to pay taxes for roads I don't drive on, schools for children I don't have, training for doctors to do operations I will never need, and I don't understand how hard it is for some people to fathom that society, humanity is caring about things beyond one's own personal benefit.

Yes lockdown was really tough for kids. Lots of those kids are teenagers now so maybe as a thank you our establishments could stop deliberately making even more things worse for them due to a weird systemic hatred of our own youth
One thing i think we need to be clear on is that the “nine years” is almost entirely getting Drs to take us seriously. These tests need to be cheap and easily available enough that Drs are incentivised to use them very widely, or else the actual issue will continue.

All of this – it's SO publishing. This initiative, while no doubt well-meaning, IS misguided, like Mark said. It's self-congratulatory and so middle class in its focus and imagination that it boggles my mind. It's ignored all of the work already being done by some incredible people and orgs.
An interesting and thoughtful thread about the national year of reading and this giveaway.

Football's weird innit? I watch rugby, tennis, roller derby. Usually there's an ebb and flow, a change of lead where the all-or-nothing is only in a tie-break once a set, or a converted try, or a jam start where the jammer and the piv are in the bin. Football is just YES or FUCK or dull stuff.

Academia is classic game and metagame. The ‘game’ is acquiring skills and knowle by dge so you can produce a paper , the metagame is ‘producing a paper’ and that’s all you’re marked on, hence cheating and shortcutting that means you win the metagame while opting out of the game.

"The point of writing a paper is to have a good final product" is something believed by people who paid others to write their papers but somehow they run universities now
