This thread in response to David Perry's post of the (horrific) NYer piece on a Nobel laureate/serial child molester brings me back to something I run into all the time: a lack of awareness of how much society has changed over the past several decades.

One thing I remember and hardly anyone seems to is that there's a sort of sexual revolution interregnum when all sex was good (seen from the adult male perspective, which it mostly was) including sex with children, which was publicly defended. Feminism, mostly, is what changed that.

worth remembering too that the way that Reconstruction congress inaugurated a new birth of freedom was by the hyperpartisan action of refusing to seat insurrectionists. which is also something we could do. insurrectionists are not supposed to serve.

The compromised FBI Director plans to travel to Russia this fall. Obviously, the FSB will be in charge of taking him around. And a reminder that he took money from a Russian agent a few years ago to appear in a documentary to bash the US. This is all beyond outrageous

Even while denying the significance of Trump's ties to Jeffrey Epstein, the Trump family has cultivated friendships with the Tate brothers, and the Trump Administration has intervened on their behalf with Romanian authorities. A lot of the US far right is in bed with them, so to speak:

Tate made a deal with the right-wing streaming service Rumble, which had recently received major investments from Peter Thiel, the tech billionaire, and J. D. Vance, Trump’s future Vice-President. The details have not previously been confirmed, but a confidential contract shows an agreement to pay Tate at least six million dollars a year for a weekly quota of five short videos and a thirty-minute live stream. His presence inspired a forty-five-per-cent increase in active users, sending Rumble to first place on the Apple and Google charts. A few months later, Elon Musk bought Twitter and reinstated Tate’s account. When Tate was arrested on human-trafficking charges, his allies defended him. Donald Trump, Jr., called the case “absolute insanity,” and Musk suggested that the authorities were targeting the Tates while ignoring “actual sex trafficking.” Carlson, who had just released a documentary called “The End of Men,” devoted hours of airtime to proclaiming Tate’s innocence; so did the right-wing podcaster Candace Owens. The activist Charlie Kirk praised him onstage. “What he says is so powerful,” Kirk said. “Our society is configured towards collapsing the American man.”

The epic investigation in the New Yorker by Heidi Blake seems to have lit a fire under UK criminal justice bureaucrats, who'd messed up last time they had a chance to prosecute the Tates (including some pretty horrendous victim blaming Blake recounts). Journalism matters for justice.
