Last night, I finished reading The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard, and I’ll be thinking about it for a long time. It landed like a particularly profound and successful episode of Black Mirror.

I’ll pitch it to you the way a friend pitched it to me, which made me seek it out instantly: it’s about a small town in a valley, and over the mountains to the east is the very same town - same lives - 20 years in the future. To the west is the same town 20 years in the past.

Extremely room-temperature take, but you can tell when a book bends over backwards to have perfect ethics, and it almost uniformly makes for a bad book.

As A Canadian^TM, my perspective on this (besides the obvious "this is terrible for the business owners, and pathetic on the part of the police") is, wait, gas stations in the UK don't require prepayment for precisely this reason??

Well this is a lovely story about how norms are collapsing and crime is something it's too much like hard work for the police to investigate www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

You're right. I was going to check the sources — but then I got high. And what's more, I was going to remove em-dashes — but then I got high. That's on me. Now I'm hallucinating — and there are several reasons. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🍁Because I got high 🚬Because I got high 🫩Because I got high

Ignoring the other part of this post for a moment, how does a chatbot actually smoke weed?
