Jumping Genomics! I run a lab in NYC that studies transposons 🧬in the brain 🧠 Opinions are all mine mghlab.org

Just sat through a roundtable on AI where they opened with- “Do you think it’s a good thing or a bad thing that AI is surpassing human intelligence” and I just. Wow. My questioning of the premise was met with some weird comments that we might need “co-scientists” in the loop. “Co-scientists”??

I was still faculty at CSHL when Watson’s remaining titles were stripped in 2018. Duncan Watson wrote a sad/angry email to everyone living on Bungtown road. Me included. He told us we were no longer allowed to use the too “intimate” name Jim The psychology of descendants of famous men fascinates me

Of all the hot takes on Rosalind Franklin, I'm truly baffled by the argument that acknowledging harm done to women somehow removes their agency. And thus, it's more "feminist" to pretend that women were not wronged by the men who tormented and harassed them

If you believe either that Franklin discovered the double helix, and / or Watson and Crick stole her data, ask yourself how you know this. Then take a read of this article.

Finally read the paper and it's worth the buzz. mRNA vaccines saved 20 million lives in a global pandemic and the technology is opening up new avenues for the treatment of deadly cancers. This is really one of the most impactful scientific developments of our time. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

mRNA vaccines targeting SARS-CoV-2 also sensitize tumours to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

The image offers a stunning variety of objects — from bright stars ranging from blue to red in color, to nearby blue spiral galaxies, to distant red galaxy groups — demonstrating the broad range of science made possible by Rubin data ✨🔭🧪

A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. To the lower left is a region filled with the hundreds of golden glittering gems of a distant galaxy cluster. In the foreground, below and right of center, two blue spiral galaxies look like eyes beneath the entangled mass of a triple galaxy merger in the upper right. A few bright blue points of foreground stars pierce the glittering tapestry.

Throughout the image, thousands of galaxies gather in clusters or are spread throughout, like glittering gems strewn on a table. Some are sharp-edged and spiral, like coiled ribbons; others round and diffuse, like polished pebbles. Still others are just smudges of various colors. The background is peppered with pinpoint stars in reds, yellows, and blues, crisp against the velvet black.

If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow. The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.

Stop for a second and try to imagine this: a heat shock protein relocalizes to the cell surface and mediates dsRNA binding and internalization! Intrigued? Read our newly minted paper in Science Advances www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... Congrats to all the authors and thanks to reviewers and editor!

Hsc70-4 localizes to the cell surface of Drosophila cells, binds to exogenous dsRNA, and mediates its internalization.
