My CERL Internship and Placement Grant 2026 at the Seminario Barbarigo library in Montefiascone

By Konrad K. Szymański (Ossolineum National Library, Wrocław)  This summer, thanks to the support of the CERL Internship and Placement Grant, I had the opportunity to undertake a one-month project focused on cataloguing, physical analysis, and provenance documentation of early printed books of the Seminario Barbarigo in Montefiascone (Italy). My internship combined both in situ fieldwork and remote data synthesis. The on-site component in Montefiascone provided direct physical access to the collection for material examination and photographic documentation, while the subsequent remote phase allowed for the thorough integration of these findings into CERL’s international bibliographical resources, including MEI and ISTC.

By Antonia Delle Fratte, PhD student at the University of Padua/Venice Ca' Foscari Since September 2025, I have been working on the reconstruction of the library collection of the Benedictine Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore, in Venice, which was dispersed following the Napoleonic secularization at the beginning of the nineteenth century. This research is part of a doctoral project funded by the Italian government (PNRR), which began in 2022 under the joint doctoral programme of the University of Padua and Ca' Foscari Venice, under the supervision of Paola Molino (University of Padua) and Flavia De Rubeis (Ca' Foscari Venice).

Rare Books on the Move: Trade, Transfer, and the Law

By Dr Agnieszka Franczyk-CegłaCERL Provenance Working Group, Ossolineum National Library (PL) Being a rare book librarian involves a wide range of tasks. You might spend one moment deciphering a Latin inscription from the fifteenth century, and the next, dusting display cases, presenting a research paper at a conference, or explaining to a child what half a century means. In between, you also face the challenge of dealing with the legal and regulatory complexities of acquiring rare books from abroad.

Special collections reading rooms from a user’s perspective: equipment and online information provision

By Janna Freiling, Information Management, Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts Anyone who has worked in a special collections reading room may have noticed that their use often raises practical questions. Researchers may wonder whether an appointment is required, how materials can be ordered, how long it takes for them to arrive, or whether photography is allowed. These questions often arise even before a visit, for example in enquiries to the library.

CERL Internships 2025 – Museum Plantin-Moretus

By Laura Semlič Thanks to the support of the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL), I had the exciting opportunity to spend nearly five months at the Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp, working on their collection of incunables. The first three months of this placement, between October and December 2025, were made possible by the CERL Internship and Placement Grant 2025. Because of the welcoming atmosphere at the museum and the fascinating material I was working on, I decided to extend my stay at the museum as a volunteer for two additional months, until February 2026.
