This is absolutely insane, imagine if a progressive elected official was refusing to support Haley Stevens if she won! You’d never hear the end of it. Centrists are the ones who are dividing the Democratic Party with their Islamophobia and purity tests.

![I'm really appreciative of the robust comment that we had this evening, for many reasons, but most of all because I think they really illustrated the whole point here.
There were comments made that I personally found offensive, that others in the community doubtless found offensive. But they were allowed to continue.
Because it is not good for the world, or in keeping with our core American principles, for me to sit up here and say, “No, you don't get to say your piece,” [and] instead I'm gonna interrupt you as you move on, and critique or disagree.
And if the principles that underlie those comments were to control our decisions as a community about what kind of political advocacy or speech is acceptable, that would be silencing a giant number of other people's equally held views.
Thank God the Evanston July 4th Association chose not to do that.
And certainly, had it been my decision, that we would have not done that, either. I think that would have been un-American, and it would have been a deliberate effort to silence a bunch of Evanstonians, by the way, many of whom are Jewish.
And so it is really powerful and important and valuable that people who did not like what happened came out and spoke on behalf of themselves, about their opinions and their concerns. We take that seriously. And it's also important to know there's a bunch of people in this town who feel the exact opposite, including by all available survey data, the clear, significant majority of Jewish people.
And I'll just end by saying that as a Jewish person myself, I am personally offended at the idea that others, who see the world completely differently than me, would purport to speak for the entire Jewish community.
