I know I married the right guy because it’s a 3-day weekend and we’re trash talking how the default Google Slides dark layout is dark gray instead of black. 🖤

Physics and AP Physics teacher in the SF Bay Area #iteachphysics #modphys #EDUsky #NGSS I also like rocks 🌋 planets 🪐 stars ✨ and organized labor 💪
Best thing about getting married in 2024 is saying my husband could get me the ✨most perfect gift✨
@drewmagary.bsky.social Hey. 👋 Your dad was my dad’s cousin with the same name and we are the SF branch of the Magary family, who are admirers of your writing. If you’re ever in SF for work (idk if SFGate makes you travel to the west coast) feel free to reach out.
Let's think about the disparity of education resources in this country: Which kids are going to get an AI tutor and which kids are going to get a teacher?
“Kids begin their day with two hours of instruction on standard topics like language, math and science, guided by an AI that continuously adjusts the learning plan based on how the child is doing in each subject.”
@pnwphysics.bsky.social I liked your Vernier sensor applications article! The carseat experiment was great! #ITeachPhysics
The rumor mill continues to run wild. Just had this exchange: S: I didn't wear my nicest clothes in my video, but if I change into them for class can I get the extra credit bonus for wearing a suit? Me: 😐
It's now 2024 and I had three boys ask if we were doing anything after AP testing and if not, could I shave their heads in class? This also started an unfounded rumor today that students could get a haircut in their final project for extra credit. 🤔
I suppose the sign you've been a teacher for a while is when the weird things that have happened to you before happen again. Like it is now 2x in my career that I have had to tell students "no haircuts in class after standardized testing" 🤷♀️ #EduSky
SF Bay Area folks, we are getting ready for our December performances. We do fun physics demos for kids! Get your tickets at www.thephysicsshow.com Our proceeds go to supporting science outreach for Title 1 ("free lunch") schools. Tell your friends!
I do not recommend going to school recovering from food poisoning, not even for one period. But my student made me these #iteachphysics cookies (there’s a density one below) and it’s so cute. I just wish I could eat them. 🥺
Bsky team were planning for "future owner is an adversary" not recognising that "current owners are one Peter Thiel phonecall from being an adversary" also should have been a risk on the table.
If I don’t put a due date on something on Canvas, it might as well not exist for my students. So why am I getting an email asking for a letter of rec by 10pm tonight because the student forgot to add me as a recommender (on Naviance) until now? 😔
Join us Wednesday, 12/11, at 5:00 PM PST for the Physics with Phones @Home free online workshop. LLNL scientist Dave Rakestraw and I investigate rotation. Intended for HS and college intro physics teachers. Zoom link and more info can be found here: drive.google.com/file/d/1s1BF... #ITeachPhysics
Pretty sure a lot of my followers are bots but I’m too lazy to figure out which ones and I don’t want another incident like the one two weeks ago where I accidentally blocked my husband.
Help I’m doing an angle-of-sunlight lab on Tuesday (reason for the seasons) and yesterday I couldn’t find the special non-reflective protractors I made for this. Anyone have a good setup for use with light sensors? #iTeachPhysics
Perfect launching point (no pun intended) for orbital motion/free fall discussion tomorrow #ITeachPhysics
how did he not get scared doing this i would’ve peed in my spacesuit
The best thing a student can possibly tell me is that they can't stop thinking about physics. #iTeachPhysics "I lie awake on my mattress thinking about Hooke's Law." YES. 💤 "I helped my gym buddies using torque" YES.🏋️ "I brake before curves now." THIS IS ACTUALLY THE GOAL. 🚗
I relaxed too much on break and now I’m paying the price. 😖 Anyone else in this position? #Edusky
Did you know that scientists no longer use the Richter Scale to measure earthquake magnitude? Now, we tend to use the “Moment Magnitude (Mw)” scale, which was built off of the tenets of the Richter scale. 🧪 ⚒️
Apropos of nothing, any #ITeachPhysics people (particularly those who teach classes with a lot of aspiring engineers), do you discuss ethics in your class at all?
One of the things I still don’t understand is how these tech bros can be pro-technology and anti science.
The more I do either one, the more I see sameness in what it takes to do a good job teaching a class and what it takes to do a good job of GMing a TTRPG. Neither will go how you expected, so don't overprepare to railroad them but if you underprepare it will show.
This is my go to sentence stem when a graph is involved. I have these posters I made in my room that students constantly reference.
I think it might help to back up a bit in discussions about classroom practice. As in... what are we trying to achieve? Are we all agreed? On what it would look like if we'd done a good job? I wonder, in the case of science, if we'd agree the attributes of a student with whom we'd succeeded.
When I got my watch in 2018, it was lifechanging because I’m absentminded and set voice reminders for myself. (I don’t carry my phone when teaching.) Let’s see how my reminders are going… 🤔
The Teacher Union Organizers and Education Association Leaders Starter Pack is now 60+ strong after some recent adds. Welcome, @parso81.bsky.social @kristenrec.bsky.social & @marisolgarciaaz.bsky.social We’re stronger together! go.bsky.app/AjeZG6X
As I was handing out tests this morning, a student showed me his arm and said, "I write the derivation for a banked curve on my arm on Monday in Sharpie and now I can't wash it off." There's no banked curves on this test. 🤷♀️ I gave him some masking tape to put over it. #ITeachPhysics
I love the problem solving part of physics. I love the problem solving part of teaching. AI has advantages, but there are LOTS of costs. KIDS still have GROWING minds that are DEVELOPING towards good problem solving and discernment. At the rate it’s growing, there’s no responsible classroom use w/Ss
Still cannot get past seeing the way AI is being marketed/recommended for the classroom as anything other than “empty calories” that will further erode the already-eroding sense of purpose of what we do in our classrooms. We cannot give that away, right? but it feels like so many are willing to…
I paused for a moment and almost considered purchasing this for…. Something…. In class
