Knitting, biking, loving the outdoors. Moving to Vermont soon!

Synchronous fireflies (Photinus carolinus), my favorite fireworks display ever, 2 years ago in Tennessee. Composite image using a modern camera and a 1964 50mm lens. I chose a focus point in front of where I thought the fireflies would be, so their lights would be rendered as out of focus orbs. 🐙🌿📷🎆

A photo of many dozens of yellow-green lights from fireflies, clustered on a diagonal from upper left to lower right. The firefly lights appear as orbs, not points, because they are beyond the shallow depth of focus. The night scene shows ferns and moss in the foreground left, and a stone bridge and steps near a stream in lower right.

I’m making a dress bodice muslin and discovered I cut out 2 back pieces, instead of a back and a front, when I was cutting the fabric a few days ago. I’m surprised I wasn’t paying closer attention!

If you like murderbot, read this! Nhi would like to be left alone to read her books and cultivate. Sadly she has to deal with people--even worse, said people are her peers and *someone* will have to take charge before everyone get themselves killed. Nhi: I don't want to but I've got this

Day 28, #AANHPI Book 28: NAVIGATIONAL ENTANGLEMENTS, a SF novella by acclaimed author of Vietnamese and French descent, Aliette de Bodard (@aliettedebodard.com). Việt Nhi and Hạc Cúc are trying, reluctantly, to solve impossible problems in space. Problems like giant jellyfish. And human feelings.

The cover of NAVIGATIONAL ENTANGLEMENTS, featuring a stylized rooster and snake, a green-and-purple space bug, and a mysterious humanoid figure

Also, for the record, what Cait said. There are many interesting, legitimate, and helpful uses for machine learning. But not LLM chatbots; they do nothing except undermine your understanding, credibility, and control of your own narrative.

I’m not opposed to algorithms! A lot of stuff branded as “AI” can help lawyers: transcription software, OCR for scans, search engines, you name it. But don’t let it write your briefs and motions—even if it’s just a first draft.

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies. Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.

TLDR: the administration wants to remove habitat loss from the definition of "harm" for endangered species, which will effectively gut the ESA. I just commented. If you're in any way interested in ecology, nature, and the protection of endangered species, you should, too. Free daily action!

My friend's student asks me to share: The administration is trying to destroy the Endangered Species Act from within. Public commenting is basically the only way to thwart this rule before getting to court. If you have a few minutes to comment: www.regulations.gov/commenton/FW...
