The one point I don't want to give to the communists in my life: that you can overthrow the capitalists through democracy (and the related ideas around non-violence) but you see stuff like this and realize capital doesn't intend to cede power back to the democratic process/the people.

Character MATTERS. Someone cannot just have the correct whitepaper collection and slogans on their site. These people will have power over you. These people will be making decisions that impact us all. Do they indicate that they can be trusted with that power? That matters just as much.

If you're speaking English, I think "Americans" is a perfectly reasonable term but in Spanish, especially among Latinos, I prefer to use "Estado Unidense" for mostly political/etiquette reasons.

The thing about people defending using USian instead of American by saying that American can refer to “people from anywhere in North or South America” is that nobody in the world ever, ever uses American to mean that.

What's got to be frightening to opponents of Mamdani and the DSA has got to be the turnout operation. The canvassers in NY-07 were everywhere for the past month. What odds does a member of the State Assembly or State Senate have going against a turnout operation like that?

I've been a political junkie for years but never before got to be a voter who can say: "we did it!" Congrats to future Congresswoman Valdez

The Valdez canvassers are relentless. I've had a canvasser come by everyday to make sure I voted (I voted early today) and I get two calls anday and at least two texts. I've *never* seen a turnout operation for a super local race like this.

It's the short-term thinking for me. These detention centers are going to be opened for public scrutiny at some point, and all the people who defended them will be held to account too if people are angry enough (and I'd certainly fan the flames of that anger if I were a politician, f it).
