It's been a week so we can conclusively say it was AI scraper bots costing @mysteriumcon.bsky.social so much money. I mean, just look at this nonsense!

A pair of green line graphs on top of each other. One is CPU Usage, and the other is RAM Usage. The left half has very high usage on both graphs, and then around the middle they both fall to almost nothing on the right. At the top it says "mysterium Resource Usage Graph"

The @mysteriumcon.bsky.social website's resource usage spiked in June for no reason. Was suddenly costing $100 in a month. Finally tracked it down to AI scraper bots. Turned on our host's (brand new 3 days ago) experimental AI bot blocker. Resource usage fell off a cliff from 50-60% CPU to 0.

It's insane how many people don't know anything about Myst. Myst is the reason we started used discs for computer games, and the game that made mainstream culture start considering video games to be art. It is like more significant to video game history than any film was to film history.

i think one of the biggest underlinings in just how bad the western industry has been about its own legacy is like. myst isnt just an old game. it was final fantasy vii before final fantasy vii. it was that fucking huge.

I'm really really happy that we can finally show folks one of the things I worked on while at Cyan. A total dream come true to get to design and write a new Myst game. Heartbroken it won't see the light of day but glad it won't sit on a shelf forever!

Earlier this year when I was in Spokane, the @cyan.com crew was kind enough to give me a tour of their gorgeous office - the same building Riven was created in - and allow me to play this vertical slice. It's so, so excellent, and it's so sad it's unlikely to ever come out.
