Oh, no. No thank you. Google Assistant worked perfectly fine without being "AI powered" to add items to my calendar, set up directions or respond to a text. Anyone else considering the move to Commodore Callback? It's nearly perfect, except for not having email or a browser. #NoAI

Excerpt from an email from Google titled "Google Assistant is going away on mobile devices":

We’re writing to let you know that the Google Assistant on your mobile device is being discontinued, and Gemini—our next-generation AI-powered assistant—is now the assistant experience on Android.1
What This Means for Your Mobile Device
As we transition our mobile experience to Gemini, Google Assistant will no longer be available on your mobile device. We will begin removing access to Google Assistant starting on September 4, and expect that this process may take a few weeks to reach everyone. Once availability is removed, you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet, or paired devices.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

MOLEY MOLEY MOLE! 😍 I never dreamed I'd get to see a star-nosed mole in my yard and then this one just scampered alongside my garage while I was watering the garden! They're so weird and I love them ❤️ #neature

I've played around with AI enough to know what it is - and any academic using it as more than a fancy search engine is playing with fire. It is capable of some degree of synthesis, often flawed, and that's about it. If you're letting it do your thinking for you, you're a fraud.

25 tonnes of nurdles, more than 1 billion nurdles, were spilled into the Tyne last week and are washing up on our beaches, north and south of the Tyne. Likely one of the largest ever plastic pollution events in the UK. There is remarkably little mention of this on here.

Guardian headline from Weds 22nd July reading:

“One billion plastic pellets spilled into River Tyne after two ships collide
Up to 25 tonnes of nurdles, the raw material for plastic manutacturing, have spread further than initially feared”

GOOD NEWS! Phase I clinical trial results out of WashU Medicine show a first-of-its-kind personalized DNA vaccine designed to treat MGMT-unmethylated glioblastoma is safe AND elicits robust and broad immune responses that appears to INCREASE recurrence-free survival in patients after surgery.
