I've read most of the books on @tressiemcphd.bsky.social's proposed reading list and plan to read the rest. These are excellent recommendations. In fact, @gilduran.com (author of The Nerd Reich) will be a guest on Movement Memos soon.

Just going to put this out there... Each of these murals is going to run about $6500. Our big mural on the school this spring ran us about $25000. If you want to see more projects like this happen, & happen to have some disposable income, funding is our limiting reagent. givebutter.com/SupportSAS26

A lot of people are reaching for a common understanding of what AI means — not what it does — and there is too much money invested in keeping people confused.
My comment on NSF-2026-OTR-0001, NSF's obsequious gutting of their own procedures, replacing them with OMB's proposed rules undermining federal grantmaking with their ideological agenda. Need guidance on commenting? @standupforscience.net has you covered: fight2win.standupforscience.net #NSF

I put a call out for mural walls yesterday and I got a lot of VERY good walls for projects of a variety of scales. Unfortunately I have only sold enough shirts this summer to cover 2 of those walls. This means more people need to buy shirts. Thems the breaks. More shirts more art. SquidFacts.Net
"a country that worries abt declining birthrates cannot dismiss the material conditions under which women are expected to give birth, recover, earn money & raise children...Before asking why women are...not [having] children, America should ask whether it has done enough to deserve their motherhood"
All of this and more. I wouldn't trade my children for the world. But this country has meant that I've traded a lot to be their mom. www.seattletimes.com/opinion/wond...

New in PN: The new "science golden age" looks suspiciously like a grift "It’s impossible not to wonder whether part of Trump’s loathing for universities is that there's no way for him to corrupt the process and make money off it in the same way he can by giving billions to Silicon Valley types."
“The report assiduously ignores that a symbiotic, profitable relationship between the federal government, universities, and private companies already exists. Each federal research dollar generates about $1.50 to $3.00 in long-term economic benefits.“ 🧪

We already do this and companies who want them are happy to pay for PhD student interns. Why do precious and limited NSF funds need to be deployed for this? Most PhD student pursue industry jobs anyways - that has always been true. Use NSF funds to support basic science that industry wont support!
With academic jobs few and far between, the NSF is testing a new approach to graduate education: Giving Ph.D. students industry experience — and dollars — as part of their training. For more, see my latest for @statnews.com. www.statnews.com/2026/07/29/h...
