The Report usefully contrasts the positioning of the State versus expertise on the question of decriminalisation State reps who spoke to the Committee – including from An Garda Síochána & Dept of Justice – were broadly against any change to the law Yet produced little evidence
The Joint Oireachtas Report has many other important recommendations I hope these are not ignored in the discussion today and going forward
Gov has been told three times By the Citizens' Assembly, and two Joint Oireachtas Committees That the evidence is clear that decriminalisation is necessary to achieve better outcomes for people who use drugs That criminalisation has failed Section 3 must now be repealed
I welcome the final recommendations of the Joint Committee on Drug Use The Gov tasked it with determining how to implement the Citizens' Assembly's recommendations, which called for decriminalisation Repealing section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act is the only way to achieve that
