I have a similar experience in basketball (the sport de jure). Played in high school. Never started. I was a solid varsity guard at a decent high school in Iowa. The guy who started: already being looked at by pro soccer scouts. He was 5'8 and could touch the rim. Quicker than lightning.

This last sentence is a good way to frame what the whole argument is a proxy for. Men who argue elite hs boys could beat WNBA players are really saying that women's sports only have value relative to men's sports, and that value will always be inferior.

the right wants to bait you into an argument that you don't need to have and that you will probably lose. it's important to recall what your principles are rather than just negatively polarize against whatever they're spewing

In a college sociology class in the late 1980s I was assigned a Marxist analysis of education that argued that the US education system is designed primarily to produce efficient workers for the labor market. And now Trump’s Department of Education is just tweeting it out.

Whenever I see something like this, I always hope that the person is just doing a bit. Sadly, I haven't been right once so far.

I would argue it's not really about trans people at all. It's an excuse to impose a regimented gender essentialism on everyone. Anti-trans bigots do not care about girls or women. They care about getting to define who is a girl, or a woman, for everyone.

A common thread linking this ridiculous assertion by vapid MLB players and a lot of other stuff in our present era (including A.I.) is a widespread fear of uncertainty. I actually hear students say "I don't know" or "I'm not sure" a lot less than I used to, and I don't think this is coincidence.

I think it’s hard to argue either that lockdowns were bad policy or that learning loss wasn’t real. We just have a society that makes no allowances for emergencies and affords no chance of making up. A lot of people are very mad about the effects of that without having any inclination to change it.
The number of points Sophie Cunningham scores is irrelevant to the validity of her argument about trans people. Scoring fewer points doesn't make her more wrong, scoring more doesn't make her more right. She is wrong about trans people, no matter her stats.
