Broken record here, but so many of these uses start with “how can we get people to use a chatbot” rather than “how do we solve a problem” or “how do we fill a need.” The “problem” according to the companies is that people aren’t using chatbots enough.

In the pre-surveillance capitalism era, you just did not have to worry about if playing a Pokémon game on your GameBoy was actually supporting the development of deadly military tech psychologically, I don’t think it’s good you now absolutely do have to worry about this with most any tech device.

It’s not really surprising that people are becoming more distrustful and cynical about tech (and everything else) when there’s a constant drumbeat of stories, like this, about a seemingly innocuous game/tool/website harvesting data that is then used for murderous purposes:

I remember meeting with Frontiers after doing a Guest Editor spot and providing feedback that I really hated the (at the time, less) automated system—precisely because of the issues around assigning reviewers and that moving toward a more automated system (what they were pushing) is a mistake.

If human editors can’t control who reviews science, it’s no longer peer review — it’s a rubber-stamp machine designed for volume and profit, not quality. I have no intention of attaching my name to it. So I’m out.

I emailed and met with the editorial office to ask for the AI assistant to be turned off. I was told this is not possible. Instead, I was treated to some vague promises of potential future improvements and a dose of gaslighting.

Over the last month I saw that human editors are now stripped of control. I could no longer stop the system from auto-inviting "reviewers" with zero relevant expertise. Even worse - the AI began actively revoking the invitations I manually sent out to actual, qualified experts.

When Frontiers started automating the editorial process, I stayed. I reasoned that as long as the automation could be turned off, human editors can still ensure rigorous, high-quality peer review. This now became impossible - the system has been entirely hijacked by algorithms.

Gender-affirming care for minors is not a bad thing. It’s been so needlessly demonized and the position has been so thoroughly capitulated to that I think people forget it’s actually a good thing. A Grammy award winning artist had gender affirming surgery at 16. It’s a great thing!
