St. Paul is being outpaced on housing construction by Minneapolis and first-ring suburbs like Richfield and Edina. Shared macroeconomic factors like interest rates and labor shortages can't explain that. Great piece here on three things that can, and what we need to do about it.

The city of Saint Paul department of Safety and Inspections is an absolute joke.

This is not true, the president of state fire marshals group misunderstood the study. It found that even with sprinklers, doors, etc. failing, fewer people are faced with blocked egress in a single-stair building than in a double-loaded corridor building.

Also…let’s just be a state where codes are based in reality and risk analysis. The study commissioned by DLI (which sets our state code) decisively concluded “that certain single-staircase buildings, with appropriate fire safety measures, are no less safe” than 2 stair buildings we currently allow.
