We have been in touch with the Council regarding the missing ghost bike at Carpenters Road—it was removed, seemingly in error, but we have been assured they will return it to its original location soon.
High quality walking & cycling infra should be built first in any new neighbourhood—not value-engineered out. Not only does this give new residents access to local amenities, it also saves an expensive retrofit later to bring the streets up to standard (as we’ve seen in the Olympic Park.)
A new housing development under construction in the Netherlands The cycle infrastructure is already in place, complete with junctions ready to connect to future homes, along with dedicated bus lanes Active and sustainable travel is planned from the very beginning, not bolted on as an afterthought
This week’s 🆓 @newhamvoices.bsky.social has a street safety theme, with front page splash and a brilliant spread on a variety of issues — including an article from us about Woodgrange Junction #RomfordRoad, which will be Newham’s first Dutch style protected intersection. Do you have your copy yet?

Bus lanes are not safe cycling infra, because buses have to pull in front of those cycling. Dangerous & stressful even when everyone is careful & follows the rules. Protected cycleways with floating bus stops make this kind of near miss impossible. (Video from Old Street—thankfully not in Newham!)

For the 5th consecutive year child casualties have flat-lined at around 13,000 road casualties of age 16 and under. In what other area of life would the death or injury of 13,000 children be "acceptable"? The government has a Road Safety Strategy that aims to reduce child KSIs by 70%.
It was so inspiring to see how many women were involved in bringing the Romford Road improvements in Newham to life. From project manager, to cabinet members and of course campaigners!

Kudos to @newhamcouncil.bsky.social as the Romford Road scheme progresses, including a new safer junction at Green Street 😍 We gathered there today for a mini celebration, and couldn't help noticing... 1/2
What an extraordinary and long overdue transformation for the Romford Road - and we can’t wait to see the next big junction at Woodgrange Road which will be Newham’s FIRST Dutch style protected intersection!
Back from holiday & delighted to join Cllr Susan Masters to celebrate the completion of latest phase of Newham Council's Romford Rd safety scheme: 🚲bike lanes 🚦signalised junctions 🚶♀️ped crossings 🌳street trees, planting & drainage Great partnership working with TfL team
An interesting detail here is that TfL doesn’t - and can’t - have accurate data on the number of bike bus users, because it’s free & people don’t need to touch in. What a squandered opportunity to provide a proper cycle crossing for East London the #SilvertownTunnel was.
The cycle shuttle bus for the Silvertown Tunnel could carry foot passengers in the future, according to Transport for London. Only between 100-130 journeys are made on each weekday on the buses, which run from 6.30am to 9.30pm each day. greenwichwire.co.uk/2026/07/28/s...
We love these new inline crossings! They break the job of crossing the road up into smaller stages, so pedestrians can deal with different kinds of traffic separately—AND reduces the need for cyclists to stop at reds for pedestrians who are already gone. Simpler and more practical for everyone!
Curious about the new pedestrian crossing on Romford Road? Join us on Wed 29 July, from 1.30–5.30pm, to meet the team & find out about the crossing & the wider Romford Road Improvement Scheme. We'd love to see you there! https://newhamco-create.co.uk/en/events/d7ab6af8-885e-4b42-ade4-769a4218e4b4
Last day to respond to the Fleet St consultation!! Option 1 will help reduce traffic and make the area more welcoming and safer for people cycling 🙂 - but would like to see the westbound uphill cycle track segregated. Option 2 is not a serious proposal!? 🙄 transformingfleetstreet.commonplace.is

A cycleway is only as good as its weakest link and #ThamesWater seem determined (or careless) to weaken as many as possible. Right now TfL Cycleways 2, 3, 4, and 22 are ALL closed in some way by #ThamesWater with no safe alternatives. How is this acceptable?
Latest example is at Tower Hill on C3. Incredibly busy cycle route, loads of vehicle traffic & hundreds of pedestrians.
The lifts at the Woolwich foot tunnel are still not working. Meanwhile…
12/ ... #TfL's half-arsed #Silvertown bike bus moves a regular 100-130 bicycles/day. X-river demand is up to 2k/hour from previous studies. Anyway, fill the empty seats with pedestrians 🤷 Press release 23/7/26: tfl-newsroom.prgloo.com/news/new-rep... PDF: content.tfl.gov.uk/silvertown-a...
I broke this story two weeks ago for @cyclingelectric.bsky.social - good to see it get wider pickup www.cyclingelectric.com/news/police-...
Call for education as police crush road-legal, council-funded Tern HSD e-bike
A legal e-bike, mistakenly seized and destroyed by West Midlands Police as part of a crackdown on illegal electric motorcycles

Can you imagine the uproar if someone's legal car was seized and immediately crushed because some woodentop made a mistake? And the Police don't even apologise or accept they made a mistake. It's good to see this go mainstream. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Tenacious is certainly one way of describing this pleasure craft currently making 20 knots along the Romford Road.
Fantastic breakfast event this morning, thanks to all volunteers, and to everyone who came for the scran and a chat. See you next year! (p.s. go to the last photo to see how the croissants were delivered)
Some of you might recall that Newham Council’s original plan for a Thames Water Greenway diversion was to close Abbey Road to traffic—but they chickened out after an objection from the Police about displacing traffic to West Ham Lane. Let’s see how that’s going 🤔 #GreenwayFlushedAway
"Some 300 mostly women cyclists taking over the streets of London was really quite the sight to see and I’m pleased to have been a part of it" - great report on the LCC Women's Freedom Ride from @cyclinguk.bsky.social 🎉 With a shout out to @newhamcyclists.uk 😍 www.cyclinguk.org/blog/cycling...
Cycling for women’s freedom
A ride around central London was a fun and fabulous way to celebrate cycling but with a serious message about making cycling safer for women. Senior Communications Officer Rebecca Armstrong went along

Newham's Westfield Avenue scheme recognised here for the incredibly smooth surface on the new Olympic Park Ave cycleway—and because cycles don't damage the road in the same way that cars do, this surface will last for years. A great investment that also cuts off a rat-run through a residential area.
Olympic Park Avenue Bridge in the East Village of London's Olympic Park where a refit has changed the layout to provide one-way for traffic on the eastern side of the bridge and a two-way cycle track on the western side, and with some of the smoothest asphalt laid in the UK. Glorious. #FridayFun

ICYMI: "TfL officers frequently talk about a 'step change' needed to ensure London gets truly healthy streets where kids play out, people walk and cycle - but there's little sign of that change and far too much 'business as usual'." - LCC's Head of Campaigns, @psimonk.bsky.social
TfL didn't build single new protected cycle track on road network last year
The Transport for London Road Network constitutes around five per cent of Lomdon's roads

"An absolute joy" 😍 A great write-up of the LCC Women's Freedom Ride 2026! Thanks @lauralaker.bsky.social for joining around 250 other women cycling around central London to call for women's freedom and safety when cycling. Find out how it all went 👇 open.substack.com/pub/lauralak...

Junction 3 of the Romford Rd scheme has had its roadway resurfacing. Road markings and🚦still to be added. A short bit of the eastbound cycle track's surface + a small bit of pavement at the NE corner also need completing. @newhamcyclists.uk
“Despite TfL delivering more 20mph limits, collisions have risen, and traffic volumes and rollout of cycle tracks have essentially flatlined. “London faces crises of climate, road danger, inactivity-related ill health and far more. TfL needs to make that ‘step change’ now, not later.”
