Max Dubler 🏳️🌈@maxdubler.com · 4d agoI avoid the term “gentrification” when talking about housing affordability because it mostly describes *how people feel* about neighborhood change, not the change itself. For example, this author talks about how containerized trash pickup will “gentrify” NYC’s streets by replacing parked cars:
Redevelopment and renovations makes up about 10% of evictions. Owner use is around 60%. That doesn't mean that it isn't important to have protections for tenants due to redevelopment, but they're much more likely to be evicted due to other reasons

We found a new place but we had to compete against many other families, and our rent went up. The approach to housing policy below would have done nothing to prevent me from being evicted and it actively made it harder to get a new home
I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said but this is an act of abject cowardice. All the endless hand-wringing about towers and concentrating development on existing rental areas, and when the opportunity comes to do something about it everyone except Lucy votes for the status quo.

It's crazy the BCNDP is putting all of its eggs in an extremely expensive tunnel to Delta When the two options are either spend 8.5B on a tunnel or bail on the project, you should probably bail. Like you're not going to win any political points building this

7 members of Burnaby Search & Rescue are home after aiding in search efforts following twin earthquakes in Venezuela. The team, which included 2 dogs, searched around 30 sites. The dogs made more than 35 indications, 3were live finds. One included a young boy pulled alive from the rubble. Heroes!

Sad that there is nothing here for urban communities. We get a new tunnel to the suburbs, expanded LNG, a transmission line to the LNG, a bigger port, and "mining and forestry support". Vancouver got a half-baked apartment purchase program that is almost certainly getting canned

This is a net positive for Victoria, but it's very unfortunate that Victoria tried bike share too early and the first attempt horribly failed. Victoria has an amazing bike network, and it could have had a cool bike share to go with.

Perhaps the biggest difference is that this is a for-profit system that pays the city an annual fee. Worse than Montreal or Toronto that subsidize their systems, but probably better than Vancouver which charges it's system for ✨parking✨

Walking onto the ferry is much better experience than driving on, but only if you can easily get to the ferry! Better frequency, and better late night connections are needed at most, if not all major terminals

Like in this photo, though you can barely tell. No rat running, certainly no speeding, it's still people-first space with the rare car travelling at human speed.

Vancouver SHOULD dream big -10,000 new units of subsidized housing -SkyTrain to UBC -Gondola to SFU -100% more bus service (as in TransLink's plan) -An intercity network that gets you anywhere in the province, car-free

I am really struggling to see how this is different from a Republican position of denying knowledge, tools, and technology to low income, disadvantaged neighborhoods.
