In fact, I think that this is *the* great sin of psychology. We want so badly to be a grown up science like physics that we never bothered to get rid of our phlogiston and ether and establish our particles, elements, and mechanics. We don't have solid foundations in almost any part of our field.

As a friendly (and very earnestly well-intentioned) counterpoint, I worry that we‘re a bit too focused on “meeting challenges where they are” before building solid foundations. Minimally, we need parallel pushes forward at all levels.

Decades ago when I studied early vision, I felt like the logic of progress in the field was a bit too formulaic (show an exceedingly well-established model is incomplete and extend it). Today I'm envying those for whom scientific progress has a logic that their community generally agrees on.
