"Hello."
Himari jerked slightly, but looked up, discovering the girl standing beside her all of a sudden. The most obvious detail was how dark she was overall. Black hair, darkly tanned skin, even dark clothes between the little sweater and pants. Next, Himari was caught by the mesmerizing red eyes.
"Hi," was all Himari could manage. She couldn't hide her worry and hope so potently mixed in her eyes.
Kyoka smiled gently. Himari's voice was soft even for a young child. From habit with her mother, Kyoka felt protective instincts flaring up. "...Want to play together?"
The gentle joy that lit Himari's face affirmed Kyoka had made the right decision. Himari made a happy 'mm!', while nodding, and twisted to shift the puzzle box between them both. She then shoved the pile of pieces out to one side so they could both reach them. Last, Himari offered the piece in her hands. "You next."
Kyoka settled down on the ground opposite Himari, and accepted the piece. "Thank you."
Himari's smile brightened afresh.

Short stories can be amazing and life-transforming and for some writers (raises hand) it's easier to write an 80,000 word novel than an 8,000 word short story. With the novel you have so much more time and space and margin to get things right. With a short story you have to nail it all, fast.

Sam ran his thumb over the embossing, feeling the arch of Witch Queen Agatha’s prominent nose and the ripples of her elaborately curled hair. The coin felt heavy between Sam’s thick fingers. Substantial. He turned it over, angling the markings so that sunlight glinted off the pair of bubbling cauldrons stamped on the back.

“How many do you count?” Hazel’s voice echoed from the stairwell.

“Same as you. Forty-seven double cauldrons,” Sam answered, tucking the coin back into the box. “To think your grandparents had all this hidden in their chimney.” It was more than a year’s profits for a skilled tradesman like Sam and a fortune for someone like the Cahills, scrimping by on odd jobs and meager salaries. Enough to keep Hazel’s grandparents comfortable in their retirement, if they had lived to see it.

Wood squeaked as Hazel descended the last step and turned towards the kitchen. Her hands were caught in her hair, copper hair pins flashing in the morning light as she fixed her braid into a crown.

“Well, that’s the thatching and the carpentry sorted with coin to spare for stocking the shop.” Hazel slid the last pin in place and gave the intricate chestnut plait a final pat. “How do I look?”

Like an angel waiting to pluck my soul out of the River.

A brown bodice embroidered with dancing foxes hoisted Hazel’s moderate assets into place over a blue blouse that matched the summer-sky color of her eyes. Sturdy split skirts spilled over her broad hips, curving as if they’d been sculpted by the Goddess herself for Sam’s hands to hold. How dare those Wardens from Miss Edie’s pub call Hazel horse-faced? Her nose was on the bold side, true, but to Sam’s eye it just made her beauty distinct.

“Sam,” Hazel prompted him, hands perched on those distracting hips. He had been quiet too long, even for her.

“You look…” Sam searched for a word appropriate to the situation. “Respectable. I wouldn’t hesitate to approve your application.”

Hello pals 💙 I have todays word multiple times and got to pick my favorite for our daily #WIPSnips

Lunaris looked around the dimly lit room, taking in his space. His wardrobe rack was on one side of the room, displaying multiple versions of the same outfit, the perfectly tailored robes made to flow around him and make him look like the night itself. His mask case was open and empty on the coffee table, the foam padding of the little box open and waiting.

He twirled a makeup brush between his fingers, fidgeting. He was so close, he had them here, now why the hell couldn't he speak? Where were his carefully practiced words? Everything he had planned to say to them stalled on his tongue.

“Do you really have a room like this everywhere?” Lunaris asked with rapt interest, drinking in the himness of the space.

“Only where the ghosts follow me.” Vex said, which was to say, everywhere. Vex liked his spaces and liked things exactly where he left them and with Cole around that was next to impossible.

From Talia: Heir to the Fairy Realm. This is one of the reasons why I feel sorry for Bastile. He's trapped, but he can't get out of his own weakness to do better.

Bastile was standing by the pool. He felt the spray on his face. He tried to gather everything he saw, heard, and felt. He wanted to put it into a box so he could take it out in the weeks and months to come, when he would stand before his father and explain all that he had done. He thought about not going back: he would go to another Elen city, and start a new life, leaving the old one behind. He sat down in the grass, and reached into the water. The coolness of it grounded him. Bastile tried to fight off the darkness. There was nothing he could do — he was trapped. The only option that he had left was to go back, leave all this behind, and become the man his father wanted him to be. “You don’t have to be that man,” Talia said from behind. “I don’t think I have a choice.” “You do. Everyone does.” Talia sat down on the grass beside him. She put her arm around him. “You can break this cycle.” “They won’t let me.” Bastile was starting to cry. “I cannot escape what I’ve been born into.” “I can’t either, but we can do our best to be better.” Bastile looked at Talia. He saw love in her eyes. “This could destroy everything. Both our Realms.” “I know, but I also know I must try. Our families may stand in opposition, but we must follow our hearts.” Talia stood up.

So when the sisters floated there, schooling with the others at this ceremony that would end their apprenticeships and begin their year of discovery, it was as galda. They wore the yellow sash of their mother's sept across their chests, and bore in their hands the projects they had laboriously completed. With matching gravity upon their faces, they presented these to their mother, Tefira min Alfasia, in gratitude for everything. Jumella's was a torque of carved shell beads upon cords of tightened kelp, all produced by her hand alone. At the center was a plate carved from one singular clam, its surface now a cameo of a sinuous beast of ancient lore with a chip of red stone for an eye. This their mother accepted with a nod as Jumella fixed the clasp behind the old mer's neck and let it settle upon her shoulders.
Jumilla's was a box, five planes of sanded coral block taken from deep within the heart of the local reef. Its coils were compressed by the weight of later growth until it was solid all across, yet the whorls and patterns could still be traced with a finger. It was held together by tiny pegs, each hand-carved with delicate care. Jumilla's thumbs bore many new scars to attest the skill required. This, too, their mother accepted with solemn thanks.

Nadia opened her mouth to answer, but a roar split the silence. Both women turned. Dozens of guards and servants hauled an enormous steel cage in the courtyard. The cage scraped across the snow covered stone. Inside the cage, a giant crouched. Giants stood the height of a two story house when upright, though giants rarely stood upright. The beast in the cage hunched, using it’s knuckles to support it. Blair had seen giants. She had even fought them as part of large hunting parties. A hunter didn’t fight a giant alone if they could help it. But this giant looked wrong. Its skin was icy pale and its face had a pallid appearance. Blair could also see a mouth full of carnivorous teeth that giants should not have. Patchy gray hair covered the giant’s chest and shoulders.

“What does she want with such a creature?” Blair asked.

“She likes breaking things, people and creatures.” Nadia said.
