Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kate not enjoying her first encounter with the nomari. “Katharine.” Oandah’s voice punctured the red haze. “You are injured. Do not move too much.” “Where—" “You are on a litter. Be still and be glad that you can rest while others walk.” Kate felt it now, the rough swaying of her body, the irregular motion. She was being carried. Testing her arms, she discovered her wrists lashed to the poles of the litter. After a while, feeling stronger, she opened her eyes again, turned her head only enough to look over the edge of her conveyance. Oandah walked there, head bowed. She wore her cloak again, hood covering her hair. “What happened?” “You failed. They struck you, almost too hard, but you will recover. Your vehicle they destroyed. I do not think it will function now to get you off from here.” “But the Alameda,” Kate protested weakly. “The ship will find it.” She would have said more, but her jaw ached horribly, and speaking seemed hardly worth the effort. “Perhaps. They will not find much but its carcass. What they find will convince them you are dead.”

#CartAugust 5 The most noteworthy stretch of water on this map (the Five Kingdoms, from my Relics of War books) surrounds the islands known as Maelstrom's Fury. Maelstrom is the name the god of storms goes by, and that region is frequently hit with bad weather. Countless ships have wrecked there.

#CartAugust 5: Waterways Rivers, lakes, and oceans are all major players in the Triempery. Especially politics and economics. Sordan is a hub and has a massive lake... but it's key feature is the Rill. The god-machine dominates the water there. But Essera has the main waterway. The Dazun River. 🧵

Haven't done #WIPSnips in forever, & I've shared this before, but it's one of my favorite moments in spite of being tragic. He looked up at the box he had to break open, though it was too dark for him to see, and felt only how much of a fool and a failure he was. Why he'd even thought of this ...

He looked up at the box he had to break open, though it was too dark for him to see, and felt only how much of a fool and a failure he was. Why he'd even thought of this impossible idea he didn't know. He didn't know if it would have worked if he was a healthy strong man, but there was no way he was breaking that box, no way he was even lifting the hammer and wielding it at all. Looccup's heart stilled, waiting for his choice. “I love you. Thank you for everything you've done to help me,” he thought to her. He had to complete what he'd started. He wasn't going to give up as long as there was even the slimmest chance of success. As he waited for his breathing to grow less rapid, Lawcket's thoughts were dragged all the way back to where he'd come from, to his home and family. None of them had ever dreamed that he'd *ever end up like this, dying here in the dark. I hope you all know that I love you and always will, and that I'll always be glad for everything each of you has given me. He wasn't even sad about dying the way he had been. Maybe it was just that it was too late for anything to change, that he was too weak to worry about anything but trying in the moment, but in the midst of his desperation, of his determination to do his best to complete what he'd started, he was strangely at peace with his fate. He may have failed everything he'd ever loved, but that wasn't a reason not to love now. His fate and the fate of all that he loved may have been his fault, but it wasn't his fault anymore. There was nothing he could change now.
