Still a mediocre software engineer, father and husband. I aspire to be a mediocre hockey player.

I'm watching the Hundred, and it's clearly a mismatch game. A result that seemed pretty locked in since the Birmingham Phoenix seemed well below par from the first 40 balls in their batting performance. The rest of the games has seemed muted, peoceeding to the inevitable result.

we are at the point where huge swathes of the media sees their only job as getting attention from the public and giving nothing back and you're supposed to juuust tell enough truth that you can't be called an outright liar, just get the click anyhow, it is used car sales masquerading as journalism

It’s like how there was that one professor who thought the recent interstellar asteroids were likely to be alien spaceships, and even though the rest of the scientific community disagreed with him, it was reported as “scientist says…”

Don't know how it was in other places, but in my kids' urban school, it was already useless before it closed. Multiple teachers were off with suspected covid, and more than half of the parents decided to keep them home. Classes were merged and not really taught anything. Was kkndof glad when closed

“I’m glad we live in a country that is deferential to expertise - but at times in the pandemic, that did go too far.” “I’m not sure school closures were a price worth paying.” Lewis on how ‘legitimate questions’ have emerged - and should be asked - about how we handled Covid.

To be clear, Restore, even more than Reform, are the party of open white supremacists. Rupert Lowe was on Joe Rogan recently implying Enoch Powell was right all along. There should be soul searching across society about this, like we did when the BNP had breakthroughs, but there is no appetite.

Despite the endless talk in Westminster about how well Kemi Badenoch is doing, the Conservatives were beaten into *fifth* place here, and were over 5,000 votes behind Restore UK. At some point delusions around Badenoch need to make contact with reality.

As far as I can see, the success of Chelsea FC's appeal against a 6-point penalty hinged on the appeal board finding that having players like Eden Hazard and Willian (173 goals for Chelsea combined) did not confer a sporting advantage.

Movie you've watched more than six times with a gif. Hard mode: no Star Wars, Star Trek, LotR, Marvel. - I mean Alien 3 is the obvious one. But we had a relatively low number of Videos when I was a kid, so Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, The Fugitive, Ghostbusters 1&2, Total Recall could all be in

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

Things have changed, but when I was over there, this system was used to shunt off ethnic Italian/Turkish/non-white kids to “vocational” training whilst the white kids were much more likely to be sent to the equivalent of a grammar school.

Germany, Switzerland etc... not only have a different balance of manufacturing vs services but also a corporate model in which companies support vocational ed at scale. We have neither. Schools/colleges aren't the problem.
