this is why i have been so insistent that activists here in chicago rethink "close broadview"-- broadview, the only stop before detainees get moved out of state-- as an organizing goal. it's not that i don't want it closed, it's that we must think strategically about the downstream effects

So it’s a race: how quickly can a person’s family realize they were snatched and find a lawyer, and how quickly can that lawyer get a habeas petition of file? And is that faster than ICE can load the detainee on a plane to Texas? It’s exhausting and terrifying. It can be life and death. 18/

Legal status doesn’t matter: if you exceed ICE’s melanin threshold, you get snatched. It is ethnic cleansing. There is no other word for it. The news has shown you video of these often violent detentions. What you don’t see is what happens to these individuals after. I’ve had a front row seat. 7/

At 26th and Nicolett in Minneapolis this morning— Feds have just shot another person in the streets. Furious community members are gathering. State police and conservation cops here in front of ~50 federal agents.

Outside the Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis tonight— Around 100 protesters are gathered across from the facility. Some vehicles with masked agents inside have been periodically arriving. DHS agents just gave another warning to stay out of the road and driveway, called out press as well.

Zac Kinney shared this photo from the second of two ICE deportation flights at MSP today - one of the 47 deportees was still in their Amazon uniform. (I counted 127 deportees on the first flight)

ICE has everything to do with law enforcement. It's literally the same private prison contractors, running the same private prison facilities, implementing programs designed by the same government officials using the same tactics. Cops fire tear gas + rubber bullets directly at people's faces too.

This is an image of a federal agent shooting chemical munitions at a crowd at point blank range in Minneapolis on the day Renee Good was executed Whatever your feelings on law enforcement, understand they don't apply here whatsoever because ICE categorically *has nothing to do with law enforcement*

Claim: These aren't cops! Cops don't fire less lethal rounds in people's faces! That's dangerous! Someone could lose an eye! Reality: Cops blinded 8 BLM protestors in one single day, by shooting multiple people in the face with tear gas cannisters, bean bag rounds, and rubber bullets.

In Minneapolis this afternoon— Hundreds are streaming across the snow and ice into Powderhorn Park for a rally and march demanding ICE leave Minnesota. It is bitterly cold. There are hardcore Midwesterners out here making their way in with trekking poles.

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites. He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him. www.wsj.com/world/china/...

Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

calls to abolish ice didn't start when trump got elected in 2024 or even in 2016. ice has operated the detention center in broadview, illinois, for ~20 years. the chicago field office, which covers six states, surveilled 20,000 people on electronic monitors as of sept 2024.

More immigrants are under surveillance by ICE's Chicago field office than ever, data analysis finds

It appears Magistrate Judge Laura McNally has arrived for the morning's inspection, along with a team of attorneys. "Hold them accountable!" A protestor yells repeatedly. "They had a week to clean things up, remember that!" Another says through a megaphone.

Good morning from the "free speech zone" in front of the ICE facility in Broadview, IL. A federal judge and a team of attorneys are set to visit the facility this morning, per a class action lawsuit alleging poor conditions and inhumane conditions inside.
