I inhaled slowly, let it out, counting the seconds in between like Madame Lake had taught me. In, two, three, four, hold, two, three, four… Slowly I felt my body relax, the tension in my spine draining out of me. Into the earth beneath my feet, like someone had pulled a plug in a full bathtub.

"The Aeon City History Museum looked exactly as boring from the outside as I expected it to. The banners running down either side of the Corinthian columns bordering the door announced a 'hidden voices' exhibit, but considering the face on the poster was the relatively popular Melete and not Sophia or Horizon, or even Eventide—despite the giant statute of xir in Memorial Park—made me think the voices wouldn’t be all that hidden, or unheard before.

I let the group go on ahead, ducking into a side-room to avoid a century’s worth of boredom as my history teacher fobbed off actually teaching us anything by making us wander a room and read plaques next to black and white photos."

"A fireball blasted forward from my hands, slamming into the side of the SVALINN soldier rushing in to brain Fe with an expandable truncheon. Fe whipped around, too late to bring her vines or a spray of seeds around to, and brought her hands up to protect herself. My fireball hit them just before their truncheon hit her skull, sending them far, far away from her. And setting their clothes on fire, added bonus.

Fe turned to me, and smiled brightly. Sent me a thumbs up. 'Thanks for the assist!'

I thumbs’d up her in return. 'No problem!'"

the thing about the NYT or HP or whatever thing you think you just can't give up for Very Good Reasons? no one can come to your house and force you. and no one will know whether or not you did unless you tell them. your need to tell them to demand absolution makes me think you know it's icky.

"There was only one way to defuse the situation. 'Ice cream!' I said suddenly.

Everyone stopped screaming and stared at me. This was an improvement, I told myself, even though it meant that every single eye in the room was trained on me and they looked like they thought I was having a mental break.

'We clearly need a break,' I explained. I kept my hands out, fingers spread to show I wasn’t mocking anyone. 'Nothing is going to be decided when we’re all at each other’s throats. So, we need a break, so we need ice cream.'"

"The lobby of the hotel was pristine and glittering. A tiered, crystalline chandelier dominated the ceiling, casting its brilliant light over the golden fixtures, dark wood, and blue velvet furniture. Ostentatious in one of those rich people maximalist days, probably built before the internet started touting minimalism, before monochromatic ball pits became a Thing. A comfortable display of wealth.

I felt incredibly uncomfortable under its glare. My boots were still covered in mud, and I did not have enough makeup in the world to hide the bruise forming on my cheek.

I leaned over to Dom. 'Are you sure we can be in here? I feel like the concierge is two seconds away from calling the cops on us.'"

'I didn’t know you played,' I said.

She didn’t look up. 'When I was younger. I haven’t in years.'

'You don’t seem that rusty.'

Her smile turned wan. 'In dreams, I’m not. But I’m sure I’d only create a terrible cacophony if I found myself to a piano in the waking world.' She ended the melody with a little flourish, then shifted to face me."

The exception is: romance. Romance sales numbers are not permitted to measure importance. When multiauthor romance box sets started to dominate the NYT bestseller list in the early ebook era, they *changed the rules of the list* to exclude them. Sales are what romance gets *instead* of importance.
