Once again screaming: Before modern medicine, the NATURAL way of doing things (giving birth, fighting/preventing diseases, treating wounds, etc) was DYING. A LOT of people died, all the time. Mothers died, babies died; rich or poor, if you got a thing we couldn’t treat yet, ya dead. THAT’s natural.

On her birthday, we celebrate Oscar winner Louise Fletcher—Vedek (then Kai) Winn Adami on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She said her time on the show gave her one of the best memories of her working life.

One other contributor to the length of time - getting parts that are qualified for spaceflight. Back in the Apollo days, manufacturers wanted the prestige of being associated with NASA. Being mentioned in association with us was a boon; some still feel that way, but not all.
