Half of my street is outside watching the eclipse and a neighbour I've never met just came up and let us all have a go on her eclipse glasses. A real sense of community here to behold this ancient omen of impending doom.

This is a very important story I'm sure but the accompanying image does sort of make it look like they're saying Henry Caville is a pick up artist influencer.
A new study shows how pickup artist influencers use smart glasses to create content, and the connection between covert recording and harm.
Why must someone who wishes to solve the financial problems that cause inequality in society also care about inequality in society? Real head scratcher this.
Why must a socialist also be woke? ft.trib.al/YduTkTO
im not going to let the right and the post left and the contrarians rewrite their “woke” freakout from 2020-2024 the way they have covid and russian interference and the afghanistan withdrawal
If early release can be altered so as to exempt homicide offences, it should be. Prisoners who have caused the gravest harm should be among the last to benefit from the overcrowding crisis. But carving out exceptions for individual prisoners in response to media campaigns is weak and unprincipled.
This is such a weird thing for her to do, it's not like she's well known for her forgiving nature. And you don't let former nazis into positions of power for the same reason you don't let former paedophiles into schools.
Fair play for not dropping this one, it’s kind of peak Kemi to go to the wire over it
They did it, those sons of bitches actually managed to get them in a row.
To be very clear: if this was just “compliance with the law”, then there would be no need for a radicalised wingnut zillionaire to offer every wacko with free time on their hands funding to bring lawsuits against the NHS.
I remember being dismissively assured it wasn’t true, that this crank zillionaire is funding basically unlimited vexatious litigation
The vice president of America thinks God is a big poltergeist.
Vance: I’ve had moments where I felt the presence of God. A friend and I were talking about Christianity and there was this moment where a glass fell off the wall. I think an atheist would dismiss that, but it felt like God was trying to send me a message. #cdnpoli
That's not true lol it's literally just free public art if you just leave it the fuck alone
Bristol artist Banksy's works cost taxpayers nearly £150k
FOI requests reveal Banksy artworks have cost taxpayers almost £150,000, with costs still rising.

Now and then, like with this Blanche thing, I see people saying that America is finally lost and, honestly, America was lost the minute they reelected that weird racist idiot president of theirs. This is what they voted for, finish your mourning, they're done and they chose this.
The old world is dying, the new world struggles to be born, now is the time of Hellmann's ketchup slices.
Honestly I've thought about this a lot and despite the fact I know some lovely people from these places it's hard not to come to the conclusion that these places are cursed. However, I do also think having a tradition of strong far right movements breeds far right movements. It's self sustaining.
Has anyone read anything good on why the east coast is such fertile ground for the extreme right? (Lincolnshire, East Anglia, the Essex and Kent coasts) Demographics aren't wildly different to other areas where it's much less pronounced.
Thangam's right, there should be no tolerance for these attacks. There should also be zero tolerance for the racism that causes these attacks, but this government has spent the last two years cheerfully agreeing with the racists and legitimising their stupid concerns at every opportunity.
This is what happens when asylum seekers are demonised. Absolute shame of it. If we like to think of ourselves as “tolerant” (awful word - for people fleeing conflict? We “tolerate” them?) country, there should be zero tolerance for such attacks. I hope the 100 are arrested asap.
Abolish the Home Office. I am not joking.
This is a really inadequate Home Office statement in these circumstancds It empathises with this protest as expressing legitimate concerns, singles out violence against police, and simply fails to say "violence threatening asylum seekers, migrants & other minorities is shocking + wrong"
I note that the very worst e.g. Morgan McSweeney has faced is some questions from a parliamentary committee, at which he said he would never do factionalism and in fact he barely knew Peter Mandelson, and that guy ran a secret wrecking campaign against his own party, took it over then ran Number 10.
There is a certain segment of uk society that is now claiming that extremely recently reformed virulent racists should be put in positions where they can influence antiracism policy and there's a massive and very obvious problem with that.
I am sure this is not Claire Coutinho's intention but this very much reads like - I can forgive because of my Christianity, so why can't the Jews?
'Hello my name's Kemi Badenoch and my entire brand and political philosophy is "being anti woke" so I'm hiring actual Nazis now. This cannot possibly backfire and will definitely have broad appeal.'
This is a very good explainer of why the EHRC code is surprising even within the current case law This is a legislative issue, the law will need to change to unravel this mess, but a greater degree of accurate clarity for duty bearers on these points would make a big everyday difference until then
We have also written a detailed legal explainer about why we think the code of practice gets the law wrong.
Today another of those dumb, horrible, unjust, ultimately unenforceable Starmer era laws comes into force, this one targeting trans people. What a rubbish legacy for a human rights lawyer to leave behind him. What an absolute failure of a prime minister and a man.
EHRC Code of Practice comes into effect today so remember to be an absolute pain in the arse to any service provider who is trying to actively enforce it.
I mean yes that is troubling, but also I kind of want a leftist bubble? The right have plenty of online spaces and the left does not, I want somewhere, just one online place, where it's possible to discuss how to implement left wing ideas without having to argue whether or not we should.
saying this not as a dig to Paul but as a general point, but it does worry me that we've ended up in a world where the two options are seemingly "leftist bubble" or "oh hey the nazis are here" - surely we should be able to have a politically heterogenous platform with tight rules on hate speech etc?
I know I shouldn't be surprised, because it is just racism, but finding out people hate Naga Munchetty is just weird to me?
Telegraph having another normal one
"Free Lucy Connolly" and "jail Zack Polanski" are not remotely intellectually consistent as positions. Anyone who's said both – hi Zia! – can be dismissed as an insincere grifter. And that's even before you factor that Connolly's post was significantly worse *and* made during a time of riots.
that odyssey review was pretty funny but also kind of like if wes anderson did the iliad and someone went long on how everything looks like a diorama and the characters have a flat affect and there's a general named "Gen. Greek Tragedy" and like yes i understand that is a wes anderson movie correct
I see Nolan's (brilliant) film of the Odyssey (which should never have filmed in occupied Dakhla) is now being dragged by (the brilliant) Emily Wilson and people are agreeing with her for confusing reasons. Come on, people, this is getting a bit ridiculous now.
Guess Labour isn't planning to stop persecuting trans people then.
Honoured to become Chair of the Labour Party. I joined our party as a teenager and saw first hand the difference a Labour government makes. I'll work with members to build the election-winning machine that sees off Reform for good and secures a second Labour term.
Alright, yes, novelty candidates are cringe but points 5 and 6 are legitimately good policies. And 9. And 11, really.
