What is the right-wing vision for a world where immigrants have been deported and public services cut? Care and other services would dry up. The return of living in squalor for those beyond working age? The workhouse? The pauper’s grave?

they still want cleaners and nurses, but they want to pay them less money, cut them off from their families, give them no route to citizenship, and be able to deport them at will.

Governments have abusively altered government ID rules in ways designed to oppress the public or specific groups or individuals, and at other times recklessly caused life-altering messes for others by negligent rule alterations, and that needs to be ended for good.

FWIW I think we should not only create such an ID, we should actually enshrine a constitutional right to possess (if one so wishes) secure, unique identification that can be used to verify individual identity, or to securely and specifically identify age.
