Overshot the Carrying Capacity

Opinionated cartoons and views on how we are doing, backed with evidence. Happy to learn more. Unfortunately my limited talent to draw isn't matching ideas in my head. I seem to be using this account for commentary. Pls assume I'm mortified by any typos.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

So this year, nuclear power facilities have been surrounded by war (Ukraine), powered down due to hot rivers (France), been close to wild fires (Suffolk, UK), are at risk from sea level rise (worldwide) and remain exceedingly expensive. At least none of them have actively failed this year AFAIK.

America. 'The planet's most powerful heat dome will be located over the Desert Southwest on Saturday, with numerous temperature records expected. Current forecast highs of 116 degrees in Las Vegas, 117 in Phoenix, 122 in Needles and pushing 130 in Death Valley?!' Ben Noll [x] #FossilFuels

Pyrocene. This fire globe surprised me, so I started googling different countries to see if they have active wildfires ongoing. Yep, they do. I guess the next question is: how does this compare to "normal" for those countries, and where is this heading. France's 34x is quite something though.

"The big tipping point was 2002. In that yr, & every yr since, Canada’s managed forest has lost C to the atmosphere. That’s 22 straight yrs of annual CO2 emissions. This clearly isn’t a problem caused by a few freak yrs. It’s an every-yr crisis & the crisis is accelerating" -@bsaxifrage.bsky.social

"2026 and 1997 are El Niño twins, both featuring 8°C ocean temperature anomalies beneath the surface of the Pacific. But they're not identical. This year's El Niño is warmer across a wider region, meaning there's more heat in the tank and its impacts won't exactly mirror 1997." Ben Noll

I am increasingly of the opinion that the speed of climatic change and the associated impacts are going to catch billions of people completely off-guard. The level of complacency as this speeds toward us is mind blowing.

Global sea-surface temperatures just reached their 50th consecutive record hot day and are expected to continue to rise for another month. This is so far beyond 'bonkers' (technical climate science term) that the Climate 8-ball has decided to start drinking early today.

SSTs have been record territory since 17 Jun "So?" some say. This translates into among other things - marine ecosystem stress - lower oxygen in seawater - increased humidity leading to more dangerous heat on land - intensification of heatwaves - impacts on fisheries This is a full-blown crisis

Sea surface temperature 960ºS-60ºN

The graphic shows SSTs in record territory since 17 Jun 2026

4 years ago today the UK exceeded 40°C for the first time in recorded history. Multiple over stations exceeded the previous all time temperature record and several other stations reached or exceeded 40°C, the high was of course 40.3°C.
