Legal scholarship impacts real lives, in potentially horrid ways, in a fashion that other academic disciplines do not. It’s not unreasonable to ask whether schools should be able to shed faculty who engage in entirely specious arguments.
A year a half a ago, this professor made a plainly false statement that “an entire literature” existed— it didn’t—and then got multiple justices to buy into the historical fiction he backfilled, covering 800 years in a few weeks. A bastardized history, not in the search for truth, but for power.

Dr. Orchid@ohwellokay.bsky.social · last mo.But also--the resources absolutely do go to local actors, it's just that for Reagan-era reasons, the administration (due diligence, capacity-building, program management) gets outsourced to a layer of US NGOs, multilaterals, and contractors rather than done in-house by a larger USAID workforce.
If we want to create foreign aid that works for all, then we need WAY more people who know and care more about aid than “USAID was an imperialist CIA project that I’ll grudgingly admit saved lives and stuff, and I guess we’ll eventually get around to bringing it back in an unspecified way”

I get the impulse to "Leopards, faces, etc" these stories. But doing so misses a much bigger and more important point: The nation's largest, most powerful GOP state organization has gone all-in on unfiltered hatred - to the point that it stunned those who've spent their life confronting such hate.

It was a constant stream of anti-Muslim bigotry, a preview of what America will look like should Christian nationalists get their way.
