*If* the health-care and criminal justice systems *never* forced the people they ensnared to call their relatives and beg for money, then deepfakes would have a much harder time penetrating our cognitive immune systems. 37/
*If* you could trust your government's expert agencies and *if* they had reliable systems for making their findings known; *if* your bank was banned from engaging in conduct indistinguishable from phishing. 36/
The most advanced technology on Earth is not silicon. It is mycelium. It is photosynthesis. It is a living wetland. Every time we destroy these systems, we erase libraries of intelligence we have not yet learned to read. The question is not whether nature is smart enough.
The Pentagon is withholding causality and hit numbers. The CDC is withholding infection rates. The FDA is withholding information about food contamination. The EPA is withholding pollution and climate data. This corrupt administration is ALL about concealing the consequences of its incompetence.
You could hardly ask for a better example of investing in vibes over value than shutting down *real* cancer research to free up money for teaching more words to the word-guessing machine because it's about to become God and cure cancer. 11/
The Adventures of Captain Comic
These bike lane designs are deadly and it has to fucking end. Build it right. Protect people's lives and stop coddling motorists.
It happened just outside of Bernice's Tavern. A white BMW doored the cyclist who was thrown under the wheels of a semi.

Ah, the trickle down theory of economics finally makes sense, just needed a basket of deplorables to catch it 🤔
Watching a series of former Confederate states rush to eliminate any vestige of black representation in the House pretty much answers the question whether the Voting Rights Act was still necessary.
Articles like this always frame taking the keys away as a personal family tragedy. It’s actually a systemic infrastructure failure. We've built a society where losing a driver's license means losing your entire independence and connection to the world. It shouldn't be this way.
As parents age, their children face hard choices about when to take the car keys
States have many policies to stop risky older drivers from renewing their licenses. But in practice, it's often adult children who must decide when to take the car keys away from an aging parent.

I want fully staffed public pools, and libraries that are cathedrals to public goods and a society where walling yourself off with money is viewed as sociopathic.
I think we're going win, but I want to win hard enough that we start paying artists to paint murals in post offices again. (This time the post offices are also banks.)
The best thing for us right now would be to declare victory and get the fuck out. michaelianblack.substack.com/p/i-hope-ame...

How is it that the best way to root for my country is to root against it?

Safe separated infrastructure is a win for everyone, let's have more, not less of it. 📷 @tomflood.bsky.social
I've noted something during my walk around my city today. I normally ride my bicycle but seldom drive. I noticed way more stuff whilst moving at human speed. We miss so much when we drive!
With Rep. @crow.house.gov 100% - a combat vet with working class roots. Caring for infrastructure, affordability, jobs > foreign adventures by draft dodging elites like Trump to enrich oil companies and advance Israeli and Saudi interests!
I wrote this comic 2 years ago. I was terrified when I wrote it but had hope it wouldn't come to pass and would be a reminder of how bad things got before we pulled back. It not only has, it has gotten even worse. This is absolutely terrifying and will destroy lives if passed.
this bill is legitimately a three-alarm fire. if they manage to define trans existence as explicit then there is nothing stopping them from genocide. i need every single cis person talking about this, calling their reps, getting out in the streets.
i wrote about the loss of randomness from music-listening and TV-watching www.patreon.com/posts/139812...
streaming platforms have robbed us of the randomness that used to be both an essential property of tv watching and a quality that mitigated its addictiveness somewhat. we were wholly beholden to whatever happened to be on! if we didn’t like any of it we were obligated to go do something else!
Wow. Another EXCELLENT essay by Michael Ian Black! I've got to give this guy a follow!!!
"Kristi Noem, once on the VP short list, is now being hung out to dry by an administration for nothing more than doing her job. That job is to terrorize people of color in Democratic-run cities and to look cute in various camouflage-themed outfits." michaelianblack.substack.com/p/leave-kris...
"It wasn't murder, and if you say it was murder we will kill you, which again will not be murder."
Homan: "We gotta stop the hateful rhetoric. Saying this officer is a murderer is dangerous. It's just ridiculous. It's gonna infuriate people more which means there's gonna be more incidents like this."
Tonight, the President of the United States has launched an unconstitutional war of aggression, dooming another generation to spill their blood for oil, and lay waste to a sovereign nation. I demand that Congress exercise its power, halt this conflict, and impeach this war criminal president.
Default crossing state changed to "WALK" for pedestrians and red light for motorists. Refractory period after the light goes red again so the flow of pedestrians isn't delayed more then necessary
There's a reason ambience videos never feature a six-lane stroad. People are instinctively drawn to tranquil, car-free spaces. We shouldn't have to go to YouTube to find quiet, safe streets, we should be demanding the urban design changes that make them a reality.
It used to be that the United States would use Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty to transmit truth across the borders of repressive regimes. Now the work of American reporters, having been censored, is being smuggled across the border to reach Americans.
The 60 Minutes piece on the Trump Administration’s torture prison that Bari Weiss doesn’t want you to see has leaked.
If you love freedom but don’t care if it applies to everyone, what you actually love is privilege.
