On 6 August 1945, the first atomic weapon used in combat was deployed over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Dropped at 8:15 AM by a B-29 named the Enola Gay, the bomb destroyed much of the city.

The Mutsu Memorial Museum is one of many things to see and do on #Suo-Oshima. You can visit the Museum of Japanese Immigration to Hawai'i, the Nagisa Aquarium, and many shrines and temples. Mutsu exploded at her moorings near here in June 1943, killing 1,100 Sailors. The ship was mostly salvaged in 1970; parts of it can be found throughout #Japan. 1/3

Thank you for introducing me. As the son of a former IJA soldier, I would like to express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. However, as I have written below, I would like to point out that the ‘ships of hell’ were just as much a reality for Japanese soldiers.
