Excited to see this review paper published! OpenAccess: doi.org/10.1029/2025... We provide an updated view on the applications of archaeal lipids as environmental proxies. Shoutouts to our co-lead authors @climategordon.bsky.social and @lipidorama.bsky.social for spearheading on this.
Wow - such a cool image from Artemis II. I love seeing the atmosphere on these sorts of images - such a fragile looking layer of gas but so important to all life on our planet
Introducing "TEXAS" — a PSM for #TEX86! Culture & mesocosm data constrain T response above 30°C. Ring Index brings culture/mesocosm GDGTs into agreement with coretops. Not linear, not exponential — the T–GDGT relationship follows a logistic S-curve. Preprint: tinyurl.com/2kfadt9p Stay tuned!

Really excited to see this paper out!! Led by @vtcoop.bsky.social we show that if you use cold and warm paleoclimates together, you can reduce uncertainty in Earth's climate sensitivity by quantifying the pattern effect and more precisely constrain future climate change www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Analysis of a sediment core from an ancient lake at Olduvai Gorge reveals that human ancestors living between 1.9 and 1.8 million years ago would have experienced a stable terrestrial ecosystem with a consistent mix of woodland and grassland. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/bxHM50XStFl

I hope a journalist on the climate beat will report on this - this may be only one piece of the general awfulness that is happening to federal science, but the NOAA Climate and Global Change Fellowship has trained many of the current leaders in weather and climate: cpaess.ucar.edu/cgc/current-...

As of today, all current NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellows have been furloughed due to the Dept of Commerce not releasing the funding for the program. In addition no new Fellows were awarded this year. cpaess.ucar.edu/cgc
This fellowship was a huge part of the reason I am continuing to do climate science, and it has supported so many incredible people. These effects on early-career researchers, who do some of the most impactful work, is going to have long-lasting implications for science and scientists.

The Trump assault on science is an assault on scientists - an assault on their careers and dreams, their lives and their families. It is a waste of training and talent. It impoverishes all of us.

The Dept of Commerce has forced the NOAA C&GC program (which supported my postdoc) to furlough their postdocs. Postdocs are at a precarious career stage - folks move across the country/world, often w/o much of a local support network

I was also a Fellow. This program brought me from my home country of Australia, providing me resources+networks that paved my career path to becoming a full professor in a US institution. Having now worked with many undergrad/grad/postdocs, I have witnessed CGC benefits to society at large.

One of the things that makes this Fellowship special is that unlike NSF fellowships it is open to non-citizens, with the aim of retaining climate science talent in the US. The furlough creates significant problems for non-US postdocs in how it complicates visa status 😳

I am one of the people who have been furloughed. And just to deal and prepare our backup plans for this unfortunate event is mentally taxing. I hope that we are getting out of this series of unfortunate events soon.
The Secretary of Commerce's new policy requiring his personal review of all NOAA contracts over $100,000 is directly harming American science. 🧪 How do I know? Because this morning, twelve of America's rising leaders in climate science (including myself) were furloughed.

With each passing day, this administration further degrades U.S. scientific capabilities. If we stop collecting climate data, it will not alter reality. It will make us less prepared to address the damage & pain human-induced, climate change generates. This does not make us great. 🧪🔌💡🌊 ☀️💨🔋
There have definitely been some significant changes to the NOAA Climate website "https://www.noaa.gov/climate" in the last 24 hours... For example, removing links and references on the page to 'Climate Ready Nation' initiatives. Stripes are gone too.
