I can’t say enough good things about this book, which my entire lab read together several years ago. It was hugely helpful to me even after tenure, and I consider myself to be a strong writer who usually loves writing!

🚨 Last month set a new record for the hottest average global sea surface temperature in the month of July! Record warmth is found in both the deeper ocean and at the surface. This isn't necessarily a surprise, but it will have consequences for around the world. Data in the graphic from NOAA ERRSTv6

Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each July from 1900 through 2026. There is large interannual variabaility, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

0 mm... Driest July on record at Kew (SW London) since 1800! 💧🔥 1800 also recorded no measurable rainfall, but July 2026 was the hottest month on record, which results in a combination very impressive for the area! 😲 Please note that the local records go back to 1697! ⏱️ 📈 Via @metjam.co.uk

At this point, I was involved, directly or indirectly, in the mentorship of students and postdocs from 12 countries (🇳🇱🇮🇹🇩🇪🇬🇷🇮🇱🇮🇷🇷🇺🇨🇳🇮🇳🇰🇪🇳🇬🇺🇸). Each of them was their own person, but there were some common communication issues, some of which cultural. They are what this thread is about. #AcademicSky | 1/11 🧵

Climate change never ignites a fire. That’s almost always humans or lightning. But it’s clear when we examine the data that climate heating sets the table for fires that burn faster and larger. Since the 1980s temperatures during fire season in the Pacific NW have warmed around 4°F… 1/

I've previously done 2026 and 2027 global temperature estimates for the Earth's surface, but a lot of people also seem interested in what will happen in the lower troposphere (TLT). Historically TLT has had a much bigger response to El Niño and La Niña than we see on the surface:

New special collection just went live! Happy to chat about it, but the short version of benefits are: rolling publications (as ready) and increased citations (by being “grouped”) and multiple involved AGU journals! Got gateway papers coming? Think about submitting your work here!
