My latest for @playthegame-org.bsky.social, where I attempt a true cost carbon accounting of the Canada-Mexico-USA World Cup, and conclude that it will be the deadliest sporting event in history, producing emissions that will kill more than 70,000 people. I call this madness "Infantinocide."

FIFA’s 2026 World Cup could emit 70 million tons of CO2 with deadly human costs

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest yet, and possibly the most destructive. College professor Tim Walters projects that the World Cup could emit nearly 70 million tons of CO2 and lead to the premat...

World Central Kitchen has run out of food to serve in Gaza. Its bakery ("recently the last working bakery in Gaza") is out of flour. There are 100,000+ tons of food in staging areas within driving distance of Gaza, and Israel refuses to let them in wck.org/news/gaza-up...

World Central Kitchen | WCK Forced to Halt Cooking in Gaza as Supplies Run Out

After serving more than 130 million total meals and 26 million loaves of bread over the past 18 months, World Central Kitchen no longer has the supplies to cook meals or bake bread in Gaza.

We are pleased to share with you a new blog post written by the GDI Students for Palestine group. The group questions what conflicts like Gaza mean for the study and practice of global development, as well as the role of universities like Manchester. Read the piece in full here: bit.ly/3QJFNyn

We track short haul flights by Premier League teams ✈️ Nottingham Forest took a 25 min flight to Bournemouth this weekend! The coach journey would've taken 3hr 30 mins 🚍 Some top clubs have got no-fly policies ⚡ So why are others still choosing ultra polluting air travel? 🤦‍♂️

🎉Scotland's first visitor levy is on its way! Greens delivered this law in Holyrood, allowing councils to redistribute wealth from tourists to Scottish communities who need it most.

Edinburgh approves Scotland's first visitor levy.

Rangers limited Celtic to just 0.07 xG this afternoon, the lowest figure recorded by FotMob or Wyscout in a fixture against Hearts, Hibs or Celtic. This was just the 15th time Rangers have limited an opponent to >0.1 xG since the start of 2015/16.

While Elon Musk has been parroting for the Far-right AfD in Germany, even capitalising on the tragic terrorist attack in Magdeburg. Turns out the attacker, Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, is an atheist who is fond of both the AfD and Elon himself. "I and AfD are fighting the same enemy to protect Germany"

Here's the xG plotted from all the old firms since the title win in 2021. Celtic's the dominant force and partly undersold given game states still, Rangers are consistently coming away short, mainly due to chronic penalty-box performances and obvious mental/personnel deficiencies

Airwars on the first 25 days of Gaza “By almost every metric, the harm to civilians from the first month of the Israeli campaign in Gaza is incomparable with any 21st century air campaign. By almost every metric, the harm to civilians from the first month of the Israeli campaign in Gaza is incomparable with any 21st century air campaign. It is by far the most intense, destructive, and fatal conflict for civilians that Airwars has ever documented. At least 5,139 civilians were killed in Gaza in 25 days in October 2023. This is nearly four times more civilians reported killed in a single month than in any conflict Airwars has documented since it was established in 2014.
In October 2023 alone, Airwars documented at least 65 incidents in which a minimum of 20 civilians were killed in a particular incident. This is nearly triple the number of such high-fatality incidents that Airwars has documented within any comparable timeframe.Over the course of 25 days, Airwars recorded a minimum of 1,900 children killed by Israeli military action in Gaza. This is nearly seven times higher than even the most deadly month for children previously recorded by Airwars.
Families were killed together in unprecedented numbers, and in their homes. More than nine out of ten women and children were killed in residential buildings. In more than 95 percent of all cases where a woman was killed, at least one child was also killed.
On average, when civilians were killed alongside family members, at least 15 family members were killed. This is higher than any other conflict documented by Airwars.
