In this oa contribution to Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, Jale Tosun, Nils Schütz, Elisabeth Maikranz and I show that the programmatic gap between churches and Christian Democratic parties in Germany on the issue of migration has widened over the years. rdcu.be/ft6wy /1

haha, thats a great post. unfortunately you phrased it in a way that allowed me, a moron, to misunderstand it
‘Polarization’ has become the master concept for diagnosing our current democratic crisis. But this is not polarization. It is the radicalization of the political right. By misdiagnosing it, we risk becoming complicit in the crisis. 🧵 Just out in Perspectives on Politics doi.org/10.1017/S153...
Not great that the richest man in the world agrees with this post. Note the giant gun in the image. 👀 1/

What is perhaps the saddest part is that, as she realizes she is going to be raped by Tate, she worries about her “brand”.
Lauren Southern's story of being raped by Andrew Tate is sad on so many levels. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
Shocked by the number of people who fall for this one. “Feminists and misogynists are the same because they are both dissatisfied with gender relations.”
I deeply regret reading this piece--but also feel compelled to point out that it contains this absolutely spectacular example of Both Sides-ing it. An NYT all-timer "influencers who are accused of human trafficking and rape" are "functionally equivalent" to feminists
“What we are seeing is a coordinated and well-resourced effort to roll back trans people’s rights and reshape public debate.” New research maps, for the first time, the rapid rise of ‘gender critical’ organisations alongside high volumes of anti-trans media coverage.
JK Rowling mentioned four times as often as actual trans people in media coverage of 'trans issues', research finds
The rapid rise of 'gender critical' organisations in the UK shows ahigh volume of anti-trans media coverage and increasing spending by 51 organisations

2. Toto blahosklonné pokyvkávanie hlavou intelektuálov nad obyvateľmi z menších miest je nový štylistický štandard? "Hľa, ľud, prišli sme vám rozumieť!"
I assigned random gender/ethnicity labels to scientific abstracts from the literature and then asked Claude to do a thematic analysis. Claude identified a clinical versus computational split for female/male authors and a DEI focus for Black/URM authors. All in completely random data.
That these racist thugs have morphed into "far right influencers" is central. Being a bigot used to be a hobby. It is now a profession. We don't have to treat the monetisation of hate as an inevitable phenomenon. We can regulate platforms - not to supress speech, but to remove financial incentives.
Efforts to deplatform Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, aka Tommy Robinson have backfired. Backed by rich American donors and the Kremlin, the far-right influencer with a long criminal record for which he has repeatedly done time offers a distorted vision of Britain has gone global.
One more thought: what if the internet-fueled participatory propaganda cycles — and those who know how to exploit them — are really good at garnering attention, harnessing grievance, and tearing down things (trust, institutions, USAID, the WH's east wing, etc.) but really bad at actually governing?
For the final episode of this season of News Over Noise, we talked with @katestarbird.bsky.social about how disinformation is actively created, remixed and spread online through a participatory social process that is driven by all the wrong incentives. newsliteracy.psu.edu/podcasts/cro...
It’s been only 8 days since the Supreme Court’s VRA ruling. Republicans in Florida and Tennessee have already passed new congressional gerrymanders for 2026. Alabama is on the verge of doing so, and Louisiana will follow within days. Mississippi and South Carolina are actively debating it too
NEW: GOP legislators just passed their 9-0 congressional gerrymander that carves up Tennessee’s only majority-Black/Dem seat. It's one of several states where the GOP is targeting Voting Rights Act seats after the Supreme Court gutted the VRA. Interactive map davesredistricting.org/join/2921405...
Breaking: Tennessee Republicans pass new 9-0 gerrymander after SCOTUS destruction of Voting Rights Act eliminating state’s only majority-Black district & last Democratic seat. Splits Memphis, which is 63% Black, into 3 districts to disenfranchise Black voters. Quite literally a return to Jim Crow

For years, but especially in the last few months, I have been trying hard to imagine what it will feel like seeing Orban decisively defeated. I just couldn't. And yet here we are: it is truly and well over. I have more reservations about Peter Magyar than I could say in 300 characters or a thread...

the Soros conspiracy coming from Elon in particular is just embarrassing. you’re worth like 80x what Soros is buddy, if you thought he was buying elections you could snap your fingers and fix it.
Sure hope the ADL is feeling good about going out of their way to defend this guy against charges of antisemitism.
Mr Fico's junior gov't partner SNS proposes to regulate political polling and assign the supervisory authority to the state-controlled Statistical Office of The Slovak Republic. Bolivia comes to mind. All of Slovakia's established pollsters estimate SNS < the 5% entry threshold since late 2024.

weird how every time a "moderate liberal" party cites "electoral realities" for embracing fascist policies they get shit canned 🙃
This article by Joep van Lit and Carolien van Ham is very useful for those interested in empirically studying democratic erosion in all its complexities.
The problem with training AI models on existing human-made data is that there might not be enough smart content. The 80:20 rule and all that; what you will end up with, at best, is a general artificial mediocrity.
