This week I was informed that my promotion to professor has been approved!! For various reasons (moving continents…) this step took a while. One aspect was the (unexpected to me) large emphasis on the numbers of supervised PhD students in the Dutch academic system.

Our work on the mechanoresponsiveness of actin is out! While plant microtubules have been extensively studied for their role in mechanobiology, actin has very much been ignored. Here we show that actin responds to cellular deformations within minutes and observed it in Marchantia and Arabidopsis!

Tofersen is an approved antisense oligonucleotide for SOD1 mutated ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). ALS is a progressive disease where motor neurons die and this leads to progressive debilitation and death in affected individuals. A subset of ALS is caused by genetic mutations in various genes.
