I think if you're thinking about human society, as a human, you can't help but generalize and reason from abstractions, and it's a mistake to be a platonic reasoner about the past and human nature but it's equally problematic (as I might be falling into here) to be a strict nominalist.

I think there's this way of viewing peasantry, esp. european peasantry pre-nation state formation, that has an almost noble savage tinged way of viewing it but people in every society are a complex interaction of superstition and sophistication

the more history i read the more it seems exploration is not in human dna, it is a 16th to 17th century western ideology that has been universalized and whose origins have been obscured.

it's actually kind of remarkable to me that there are living human beings that admire augustus as a role model as interesting history? sure. a role model? fuck me your brain is broken

Honestly, just being honest, gotta be honest here. Touching an 1800 year old object as an American is fucking mind blowing 🤯 Elagabalus IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG LIBERTAS AVG

Sound down! I had Merlin app listen to this blue jay as I hadn't heard this vocalization. Merlin said 'Wild Turkey'. Blue jays have advanced vocal learning capabilities & large repertoires, they can produce surprising vocalizations including domestic/wild turkey gobbles & clucks. #birds

Mr. @bretdevereaux.bsky.social, Kaldellis was on Lex recently and stated iirc with few exceptions the Roman Empire never really used its military forces for social suppression as a military dictatorship would. Is this a standard academic take? It seems as I read Kulikowski it wasn't uncommon.

Accessibility first design sounds great but there's no one design that perfectly accommodates all contexts or situations even for a given piece of software or hardware. I think starting from accessibility assumes software is easy, but making accessible software is a lot.

Every classic warfare trick that they call clever is actually just perfidy. I have a new Theory of Ancient Perfidy: did an ancient author call it clever? It's perfidy. Trojan horse? Perfidy. Red cliffs? Perfidy Hastein's coffin? Perfidy. The Cimbri at Noreia? Perfidy.
