Far from the madding crowds... Politics, society, culture and stuff. Views from the shores of the Baltic

The nasty little thing with climate change is that the situation progressively gets worse as long as we emit greenhouse gases, and that is irreversible. So there's no happy message "Let's bring emissions to zero and then everything will be alright" Nope, everything will be worse than it is now. 1/

What I really want to hear Burnham say is that awful, evil politicians have been fearmongering and weaponising the whole issue of immigration, in a way that causes everyone harm. He doesn’t even need to mention that Starmer was one of them.

This is tragic and all too common. Same old response from Burnham as previous PM's. Instead of focusing on why people have to use irregular routes, or the need to ensure that they can receive asylum without them, it is all about how measures need to be tougher. news.sky.com/story/three-...

Beef has a huge climate problem. And the most effective solution -- by far -- is to simply reduce beef consumption and waste. But we don't want to hear that, so we often welcome fuzzy greenwashing stories instead. In the end, however, the math doesn't seem to work. drawdown.org/insights/gre...

Interesting how many of the people who believe The Odyssey should be true to the source material because of “civilization” are the same who think university departments that teach The Odyssey should be shut down because they add nothing to society.

When covering Sweden intl outlets focus on immigration and right-nationalist Sweden Democrats (SD). SD been around 20% for over decade. More open cooperation w/SD hasn't benefited other right-wing parties. Top two voter issues? Healthcare and Education. Crime/Immigration important, not dominant.

A barrister represents his clients in court. Clients who are political dissidents. He now faces criminal prosecution for doing so. Not Turkey. Not Egypt. Not Russia. England. Astonishing, deeply disturbing, and part of a long slide towards authoritarianism. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

Sat on a lovely quiet peaceful beach in the middle of nowhere* and some dick turns up on a jetski and proceeds to whiz aimlessly to and fro. 🙄 ..before finally disappearing again... *In the Sörmland archipelago.

A traditional small wooden boat floating off a sandy beach. The sea is calm and the sky is turning amber with the approaching sunset.

Global sea-surface temperatures just reached their 50th consecutive record hot day and are expected to continue to rise for another month. This is so far beyond 'bonkers' (technical climate science term) that the Climate 8-ball has decided to start drinking early today.
