Stede put the phone down on his desk and experienced a sudden, desperate need to look out of the window. Crossing the study, he swept open the curtains and stood with his hands behind his back, considering the lamplit dark of his own front garden. The rain was unrelenting and the wind had picked up, swaying the branches of the skeletal apple trees and ransacking the border shrubs. The sky was starless with just a smudge of clouded moon and in the distance a fox screamed its hideous song of love.
Well, that all seemed to be in order. Definitely worth checking, though. Right. Superb.
What if he was loved? What if he was actively, at this moment, being loved? He wished he could see Ed. If he could see Ed he might know what to say.
He pictured him standing under the streetlight on the other side of the road, wet boots and a black umbrella for a halo. Even from that distance he'd still be looking Stede dead in the eye. A car drove past, wipers lashing, headlights two beams of slanting rain and Ed vanished in the spray of its passing.

Text: Why Nepal? On 26th August, a devastating flash flood hit the Nepal-Tibet border, creating a humanitarian crisis on a huge scale. Hundreds are dead, and thousands are unaccounted for.

This raffle is to support the work of aid organisations operating in the region to assist with search and rescue efforts and to provide food and medical care to survivors.

#WIPWednesday for Ch 3 of Several Inches Deep, in which Ed and Stede attempt a conversation. #OFMDfic

Stede was still standing awkwardly, and it was making Ed want to get up and pace. Maybe he could turn things on their side by stealing a march on Stede and fleeing first. See how he liked it when the shoe was on the other foot. Stede was watching him, gaze focused on the lower part of Ed’s face, and Ed realized that while he’d been pondering, he’d been scrubbing his hand against his chin, which, fuck, if that wasn’t revealing. He deliberately dropped his hand to his lap and took another drink.

“You’re doing it again,” Ed said when Stede took another step toward the fireplace.

“What? Oh.” Stede looked a little embarrassed as he resettled himself in the other chair. “I don’t know how to do this.”

That at least made two of them. Ed wanted to look over at Stede, and also, to not do that. Stede had been genuinely shocked to see him, Ed thought. Ed was less so. He was surprised to find Stede here, now, specifically, but he could have always found Stede. He’d just given up looking. The last time had been during a low point in the fucking pandemic. There’d been a video of Stede working a huge puzzle with his kids, and they’d looked happy. Ed had been so down it might have made him a little sick, and he’d sworn off looking again, which meant he’d sort of missed the entire fucking divorce.
