Angus Johnston@angus.bsky.social · 8h agoThe decisive failure of GOP referenda in Kansas Amendment 1 and Missouri Amendment 4 yesterday is yet another reminder of something I've been saying for a while: Voters, even Republican voters, now regularly despise and repudiate GOP attempts to use them to destroy democracy.
Critical wagon-circling around extremely well-reviewed, profitable, high-end popcorn movies — Nolan, the Tom Cruise extended universe, etc — is one of the more complex pandemic/post-pandemic cultural phenomena to me. It's fine to think The Odyssey sucks!

If the biggest most popular works can't get critical debate, then what can? Frankly Nolan is probably delighted. It helps the film to have debate
Trying out a take: more than his other films, Nolan's Odyssey is about the spectacle of practical, in-camera "tricks" — Polyphemus puppet, the pigs, etc. Its story isn't unimportant, but it's also just a widely-known narrative frame to occasion a series of visual attractions. It's early cinema.
I live in STL, and I've proudly voted for Cori Bush three times. We are a deeeeeep blue district currently represented by a featureless replacement-level moderate democrat — we don't need to play it safe. We have a responsibility not to. Bush wasn't a perfect candidate, but that's not why she lost.
I know we are chalking the success of some leftist candidates almost entirely to the DSA. However, it seems like the more common theme is that these are candidates with organizing experience?
As we were watching the screeners for this new season, Mel said, "This is like 'TED LASSO: THE RIDE.'" I can't do better tv criticism than that.

Once again, I note that wind farms are majestic, awe-inspiring feats of human engineering that Republican men should love. They're huge pieces of industrial tech, and they're even phallic! If oil money weren't a factor, Republicans would be running on building the biggest windmills in the world.

Em-dashes are a gift to writers who value rhythm and tempo in their writing, and who like to sweep the reader up in a continuous stream of thought. Quitting them because of AI is very much a Michael Bolton "Why should I change? He's the one who sucks" situation.
