Only a small part of the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s revised statutory code of practice has received public attention: the section explaining how to implement the 2025 decision of the Supreme Court, which clarified that in the Equality Act 2010 the words “woman”, “man” and “sex” refer to biological sex. On that point, the 2011 version of the code was wrong. It said transgender people should generally be permitted to self-identify into singlesex services for the opposite sex.

It had been known that the old code was wrong since 2022, when another case established that “self- ID” is not the law. That is when hospitals should have stopped making female nurses share changing rooms with male colleagues who identify as women. It is when male prisoners who discovered a transgender identity between the courtroom and the prison cell should no longer have been placed into women’s jails.

Female-only rape crisis centres should have refused entry to men who said they were women. And shops, leisure centres and pubs should have taken down the signs telling customers to use whichever toilets they felt comfortable with.

But those things did not stop. The law was widely ignored until the Supreme Court judgment. Stonewall quickly announced that it was “not law” until the revised code took effect. That was irrefutably wrong, but it took hold.

The fact the new code takes effect today feels like a victory but in reality it changes nothing. The law was already the law, and it will continue to be the law. It will still be disregarded by those who oppose it and it will remain unenforced by the EHRC, which simply cannot take up the cudgels on its meagre funding.

It is not a historic day for women’s rights but the code is at least a tool in the armoury of those women and grassroots groups who will have to carry on fighting this uniquely ferocious war. We salute them.

Me, in response: It's extremely difficult to have these conversations in good faith when your entire argument is just
"penis". A trans woman is only entering a domestic abuse shelter for one reason - because she's been domestically abused. A trans woman is only entering a rape crisis centre for one reason - because she's been raped. I actually think it's pretty fucking disgusting that the "gender critical" movement has dehumanised trans people to the level that they would both deny them the support they so clearly need, and also treat them as an aggressor in that scenario. They are victims searching for help.

Very noticeable Amnesty basically changed their position to (so-called) "biological sex" purity almost immediately after meeting with sex mattress, which vindicates my hypothesis that sex mattress are actually just the Borg from Star Trek.

A settlement was reached in relation to a legal action taken against our client, Féile an Phobail, in advance of this morning's High Court hearing which has resulted in the Plaintiff (WRN_NI) discontinuing proceedings forthwith.
The Plaintiff has undertaken not to commence any proceedings whatsoever against Féile an Phobail officers, employees or volunteers, arising from the decision to cancel the 'Panel discussion', the subject of these proceedings, that was due to take place on the 4th August 2026.

I’ve thought long and hard about commenting on the controversy over the cancellation of the Women’s Rights Network (WRN) event at Féile an Phobail — not because I don’t have an opinion, but because it is a debate that attracts the most toxic elements.

WRN NI was not a group I was familiar with beforehand, so I did some research.

No speakers were listed in the Féile programme for the planned event, which in itself is odd as there are for almost every other of the 90-plus debates and discussions.

The group has since announced who its speakers were to be in a series of online posts.

My research took me down quite the rabbit hole — a who’s who of the anti-trans movement not just on this island but Europe-wide.

I don’t pretend to understand their motivation.

In fact, I remain baffled as to why in one of the most dangerous places for women to live in Europe, the group — which has spoken out about femicide before — is obsessing about a small minority instead of the actual dangers we face from domestic violence and femicide.

I have worked for decades covering violence against women and girls in all the distressing forms that takes.

I know the names of every woman and child murdered in Northern Ireland in the last 10 years without even having to look them up.

Not a single one was caused by a trans woman — I checked the list twice just to be sure.

None of them were murdered in a public toilet either, which having looked at the online posts of WRN and their many affiliates, is apparently the most dangerous place on earth for women, with trans predators lurking in every cubicle.

Apart from the absurdity of much of the group’s argument regarding the perceived dangers of trans women, the claim that women are being silenced by Féile is the most disingenuous of them all.

My Trans Pride interview included a reference to Cass that UK reports left out, but interestingly the Murdoch owned NT News Australia did broadcast these words. ‘If you continue adhering to the Cass report, which has been widely discredited, you are complicit in the deaths of these young people’.
