Help me see this more clearly. I'm using this data: doi.org/10.25318/371.... Yes, in Canada over the past 5 years there has been about a 3% increase in faculty, while student growth has been about 8%. In Ontario, the number decreased slightly (by about 100) in 24/25. Am I reading something wrong?

In the US, typically TTs are hired in their late 20s/early 30s and then have 6 years to get tenure. A more illuminating metric might be under 40 than under 35.

Have had four retirements in my department in the past three years and no hires.

The comments about this post target people who won’t retire, and that certainly can be a problem. A bigger problem is that university management is loath to replace them. The lack of under 35s has more to do with unsustainable university finance, & program management, than too many over 70s. #cdnpse
